Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry) lived with Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc) for much of Friends, but he also briefly lived with another roommate named Eddie Menuek. The minor character, played by Adam Goldberg, appeared in a total of three episodes in Friends season 2. His arc was short, but unforgettable thanks to Goldberg’s terrifying performance. What exactly happened to Eddie after living with Chandler is up for interpretation, but we have a few thoughts.

Season 2’s “The One Where Eddie Moves In” dealt with Chandler’s situation after Joey got his own spacious apartment. At first, it seemed like Chandler and Eddie got along well, but in reality, they had nothing in common, especially compared to Chandler’s connection to Joey. The pair attempted to bond until Chandler realized his new roommate was a bit unhinged. When Eddie’s ex, Tilly, visited to return a fish tank, Eddie accused Chandler of having an affair – and of killing his pet fish.

Eddie’s behavior got increasingly more alarming. After stuffing a live fish in his pocket after a confrontation with Chandler, he stole the insoles of Chandler’s shoes. To make matters more disturbing, Chandler learned that Eddie watched him sleep every night. To escape Eddie’s behavior, Chandler decided his roommate had to move out. After Eddie declined to acknowledge the request, Chandler moved all of his belongings to the bottom of the stairs. When Eddie arrived and found a different lock on the door, Chandler pretended not to know him and managed to successfully convince his former roommate that he’d never lived there. Eddie was never seen again in the series.

Based on Eddie’s behavior on Friends, many viewers believe he suffered from undiagnosed schizophrenia. Chandler assumed that Eddie was mentally ill, especially after his new roommate imagined that the duo once went on a trip to Las Vegas together. Making a character with mental illness as the target for laughs would have been in poor taste, so instead, Friends never confirmed what was going on inside of his head.

After being forced to move out of Chandler’s apartment, Eddie would have had to find a new place to live. Maybe he returned to Tilly for help, or found a new roommate in the city. Either way, Eddie didn’t return in Friends, but Goldberg actually did return to the wider franchise. The actor appeared in the spinoff series Joey, playing the role of Jimmy Costa, a friend of Joey’s and the father of Joey’s nephew, Michael Tribbiani. Goldberg wound up befriending some of the Friends cast members, including LeBlanc, which helps explain how he wound up appearing in seven episodes of Joey.
