Fuller House would’ve had a stronger finale had it moved forward with its plans for season 6. After five years, the Full House spin-off wrapped up with the triple wedding of  DJ (Cameron-Bure) and Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin),  and lifetime-friend Kimmy Gibbler’s (Andrea Barber). While the finale gave all the characters their respective happy ever after – with everyone still deciding to live under the same roof – it turns out Fuller House creatives still had something planned for another season.

Cameron-Bure, who also served as a producer for Fuller House, revealed the cast and crew were expecting a sixth season order from Netflix, and they were prepared to end the show with that. While she doesn’t know why the streaming service pulled the plug on their show a year early, she reveals some storylines they’re supposedly saving for their intended final season. That includes more focus on Stephanie’s upcoming journey as an expecting mom (after she briefly revealed in the show’s parting shot that she’s pregnant), as well as her first-born Danielle – who is barely in Full House season 5 following her birth at the end of season 4.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

While seeing DJ, Stephanie, and Kimmy all walk down the aisle and marry the love of their lives is a good send-off, the wedding hogged the series’ final nine episodes that there’s barely any focus on other characters like the kids, who are growing and dealing with their issues. The offshoot was always focused on the older cast, potentially because past Full House viewers are more interested in these familiar faces more than anything else, but by doing this, Fuller House missed the opportunity to expand its fanbase – backed up by the reported steep drop in viewership between season 1 and season 2. The base audience was enough to get them through four additional seasons, but with demographics not growing, it couldn’t go past its fifth year. So, how does the theoretical sixth season result in a better finale and Fuller House in general?

Fuller House Season 6 Would’ve Allowed For More Inclusive Storylines

As Cameron-Bure said, they were saving more Danielle-focused episodes in season 6. One of the primary reasons Full House resonated with a lot of people is that it centered on Danny (Bob Saget), Jesse (John Stamos), and Joey (Dave Coulier) navigating parenting DJ, Stephanie, and Michelle (Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen). While Fuller House introduced a string of new young characters like DJ’s kids and Ramona (Soni Nicole Bringas), they’re barely the center of an episode – instead, their stories are typically B-plots. In the rare times that the sequel tackles their issues – like how Max (Elias Harger) struggles with perfectionism – it just doesn’t have the same emotional impact say with how Full House dealt with a young DJ struggling with body image or Michelle having separation anxiety when Jesse was about to move out with Becky (Lori Loughlin).

This is because the relationship between the older and younger cast just isn’t properly established in Fuller House compared to the original series; aside from passing encounters in the house, storylines involving an older and a younger cast member tackling the same issue where they both come out learning something are very rare, resulting in a narrative divide. In worse scenarios, Fuller House doesn’t even provide a proper pay-off to these types of stories, evident in the final season storyline about Jackson (Michael Campion) and Ramona vying for the lead role in a school play. With everyone now living under the same roof and the older cast’s romances pretty much resolved, Fuller House season could focus on the characters’ day-to-day adventures like the Ramona and Jackson deciding for college or Max adjusting to his new advanced school.

Fuller House Season 6’s Danielle Story Would Put The Focus On The Young Cast

Fuller House already missed the opportunity to capitalize on their young cast especially Tommy – DJ’s youngest kid who’s around the same age the Olsens were when they began playing Michelle in Full House. The kid grew up without much to do in the show except for some appearances. There are no storylines about him trying to learn how to read or starting daycare – as Michelle did in the original show, resulting in the viewers not caring about the character. The arrival of Danielle, and eventually Stephanie’s upcoming baby would’ve given the series the chance to rectify Fuller House‘s misstep with Tommy. Fuller House pushing through with season 6 would’ve put Danielle in the same age as Michelle was in Full House, and if the sequel spin-off can cast an infant who’s as charming and intuitive as the Olsens, they could’ve easily taken cues from their predecessor when it comes to using the baby as a main selling point.

As Fuller House moved away from the wedding in season 5 and begins to focus on Danielle, the series could’ve also more actively dealt with its younger characters. The Netflix spin-off could better utilize Tommy by fostering a relationship between her and Danielle. Perhaps, Jesse and their adopted daughter Pamela can also frequent the Tanner house for some playdates. Meanwhile, Danny and Joey can be brought in to babysit the kids as their parents go on a weekend holiday.  This way, Fuller House is endearing fans to a new crop of characters that could maybe spearhead another offshoot in future years to come.

Fuller House Season 6’s Stephanie Story Would Be Better Than DJ’s

Before officially ending, Fuller House drops one final surprise – after believing she’s unable to get pregnant, Stephanie delivers the good news that she’s in fact, expecting. The show didn’t have enough time to tackle this bombshell more, but this narrative development would’ve also been a focus on the scrapped season 6. Between being a first-time mother to Danielle and a pregnant newly-wed, this storyline would’ve put the middle Tanner sister at the center of the franchise’s signature parenthood arc, edging her sister DJ to the side. While Fuller House‘s initial premise centered on DJ’s task to raise her three boys after the death of her husband, the show, frankly, barely explored this. Instead, her seasonal arcs mostly centered around her job as a veterinarian and her love life. In hindsight, it may have been for the better considering that this doesn’t offer Full House viewers something new since she’s used to taking the parenting role being the eldest Tanner daughter. On top of that, fans have essentially seen her parenting style with Danny considering their stories are parallel to each other.

Shifting the parenting spotlight on Stephanie, on the other hand, would’ve offered Fuller House something different. In many ways, she’s the spin-off’s equivalent of Jesse from the original show. Both characters are known for their rogue ways who were simply forced to help to raise kids. Like Jesse, Stephanie didn’t plan on relocating to San Francisco, she only changed her mind when she realized how much her sister needed her. The difference, however, is that Full House did a great job establishing Jesse as a parental figure, especially to Michelle, while its contemporary has had limited one-on-one interactions with her nephews, and even her own daughter. Now, with her own family and another baby on the way, Fuller House season 6 could’ve fully tackled how she is as a mom. Adding a modern twist to her story is now she has to find the balance between her growing family and career since she’s also middle of restarting her music career having just toured with Lisa Loeb.

Fuller House moving forward with their season 6 plans would’ve led to a stronger finale as it doesn’t feel like everyone else was underutilized because much of the focus in the last nine episodes was at the triple wedding. Perhaps they don’t get to end with another big family event like they did in season 5, but an extra season would’ve allowed the show to shift its focus and tackle more normal, yet more impactful narratives – something that Full House did really well.
