The triple wedding in the series finale of Fuller House functioned as a mini Full House reunion for the Tanners, but one character wasn’t supposed to be there. After five seasons, Netflix’s spin-off sequel ended with a happily ever after for DJ (Candace Cameron-Bure), Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin), and Kimmy (Andrea Barber) as they married Steve (Scott Weinger), Jimmy (Adam Hagenbuch), and Fernando (Juan Pablo Di Pace), respectively. While the ceremony went through a few hurdles, including a last-minute venue change to the Tanner family backyard, things turned out to be perfect for the girls.

Due to the size of the place, the wedding felt intimate and cozy, which made sense considering that not many people were invited to the occasion. Since Fuller House never passed up the opportunity to establish a link to Full House, the celebration interestingly featured a lot of familiar faces from the original show. That includes Danny’s former fiancée, Vicky (Gail Edwards), as well as Kimmy and DJ’s exes, Duane (Scott Menville) and Viper (David Lipper). There were also some major absences in the Fuller House finale like Aunt Becky (Lori Loughlin), Nicky and Alex (Dylan and Blake Tuomy-Wilhoit), and of course, the Tanner youngest sister, Michelle (Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen).

Fuller House‘s triple wedding finale turned out to be the perfect send-off to the show. It was an appropriate ending for the girls, who have spent the last five seasons growing as individuals and as a group. That said, there’s just one aspect of the celebration that doesn’t really make sense — CJ’s (Virginia Williams) presence. It didn’t seem weird for the Tanners to have a lot of exes in the party, but CJ was a different case since she almost married Steve.

Introduced in season 2 of Fuller House as Steve’s girlfriend, CJ had been a recurring character in the show while she was dating DJ’s would-be husband. She was set up with Steve by Matt (John Brotherton) after DJ took a little too long to decide which one of the boys to date. CJ’s similarities with DJ were immediately clear — both have similar-sounding names, come from a family of huggers, and have a penchant for antacid-inspired cursing. They also look the same. Without those other qualities, it can simply be passed up as Steve having a type, but even DJ found it weird that she and CJ were so similar. Despite the warning signs, Steve still pushed forward with dating CJ. They got engaged and quickly planned a destination wedding to Japan where the bride’s parents were living. The whole Fuller House crew traveled for the occasion, but in the middle of the ceremony itself, Steve backed out and admitted to being in love with DJ instead. It was a disaster after that; CJ’s stepdad, who has ties with the Yakuza, threatened to kill Steve, and while the whole ordeal panned out humorously, the situation was serious. It was very humiliating for CJ and her family, and thinking that she’s willing to watch her ex-fiancé get married to the girl he left her for is absurd.

Full House and Fuller House tended to keep their stories light in order to appeal to a broader audience. Having CJ at DJ and Steve’s wedding was more likely the spin-off’s way of showing that people can forgive and move on from conflicts. That said, there’s also no real urgency to do this. DJ and CJ had already briefly talked about the matter, and while they decided to bury the hatchet, it’s just not realistic that someone would enthusiastically attend the wedding of her almost-husband given how things fell apart for them.
