Instead of Danny (Bob Saget), Jesse (John Stamos) walked Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin) down the aisle during Fuller House‘s series finale, and it’s possible that the middle Tanner sister didn’t want her dad to escort her during her own wedding. In 2016, Netflix reopened the iconic San Francisco home after more than two decades since it first closed its doors when Full House ended in 1995. The offshoot focused on Tanner sisters DJ (Candace Cameron-Bure) and Stephanie, as well as, their neighbor and long-time friend, Kimmy (Andrea Barber).

While the primary focus of Fuller House was DJ as she went through the same thing her dad did in the original show — losing a spouse unexpectedly and having to raise three young kids, the spin-off gave the other characters their respective arcs. For Stephanie, that includes having to give up her days as a partying DJ to stay at home and help her sister. While she was initially hesitant about this move as she missed her fast-paced life, she learned that she actually likes staying at home. Eventually, she decides she wants a family herself which came true, ironically, thanks to the Gibblers. Stephanie started a romantic relationship with Jimmy (Adam Hagenbuch), while Kimmy functioned as their surrogate for their baby, Danielle.

With a family of three, the only thing left to do to make things official for Stephanie and Jimmy is to get married. Right after the birth of Danielle, the couple got engaged with their wedding taking place at the same time as DJ and Steve (Scott Weinger), as well as, Kimmy and Fernando (Juan Pablo di Pace) in the Fuller House finale.

Why Danny Didn’t Walk Her Down The Aisle

Fuller House devoted its final nine episodes to building up the triple wedding. While almost everything that could go wrong on the day itself did, the Tanners came through by relocating the event to the house’s backyard which gave it a more intimate feel. Danny, Jesse, and Joey escorted DJ, Stephanie, and Kimmy down the aisle respectively. It was an emotional moment seeing the men who raised the girls give them away on their wedding day. However, there’s some fan commotion about why Danny opted to only walk DJ at the ceremony when Stephanie was also getting married.

The reason boils down to the writers wanting to partner the girls with the parent figure whose arc closely resembles theirs as a way to better establish a connection between Full House and Fuller House. Joey and Kimmy are both weirdos who were adopted into the Tanner family and are as equally important as anyone else in the clan. Danny and DJ are the responsible ones who had to navigate through the sudden death of a spouse. Finally, Jesse and Stephanie are the laid-back, rockers who initially didn’t care about settling down; after spending some time home, they slowly change their minds and ultimately become great parents themselves. Fuller House tried hard to make sure that all three parallels worked throughout its five-year-run, so while it may not be obvious, the show had subtly based Stephanie’s arc on her uncle’s. In fact, in the earlier seasons of the show, the pair would have their heart-to-heart moments as Jesse guide his niece in becoming a better aunt for her nephews.

Danny Was Always Harder On Stephanie

It goes without saying that Danny was a good father. On the heels of Pam’s death, he made sure that the kids are fine and was focused on keeping them on the right track. Granted that he had his quirks like being an obsessive neat-freak, it wasn’t exactly a bad thing — only a mild annoyance. Throughout Full House‘s eight-season run, the Tanner patriarch had countless moments with his three girls, however looking back, it’s obvious that while he was extra hard on Stephanie.

Since Michelle (Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen) was too young for the most part of Full House, it’s understandable that her dad was more tolerable on her. It’s also worth noting that he had a very special relationship with Jesse, and one could argue that she’s much closer to him than Danny. The discrepancy in treatment was most obvious between DJ and Stephanie, however. While DJ was always the academically-inclined one, she’s committed some serious offense, especially as she became more socially active. Full House season 5, episode 14 titled “Sisters in Crime”, DJ snuck her sisters to a theater for a date as she was tasked to babysit them. Danny was mad at her, but instead of grounding only her, he also included her sisters in the punishment which was unfair considering that they didn’t have a choice in the matter. In Fuller House’s second episode of season 7 titled “The Apartment,” DJ accidentally dumped cement on the backyard while sneaking out with Steve after she was prohibited in doing so, but instead of scolding her, Danny even apologized for hurting her feelings. Granted that Danny was overreacting after learning about DJ’s classmate suddenly getting pregnant, DJ only made it worse by breaking her curfew and not informing her father that Kimmy was unable to hang out with them at the last minute.

That said, when it came to Stephanie’s trespasses, Danny was quick to judge. In season 6, episode 10 titled “I’m Not DJ,” she was forced to have Kimmy pierce her ears because Danny refused to give her permission to get them done properly. After she was caught, Stephanie had to explain that she wanted to be treated as an individual, rather than a shadow of DJ. Fortunately for her, Danny was somehow empathetic, but it’s odd that she needed to stand up for herself when her father is partially at fault here for ignoring her pleas. Meanwhile, in Full House season 3, episode 20 titled “Honey I Broke the House,” Stephanie accidentally backed Joey’s car into the garage causing it to go through the kitchen. Danny got so angry that she told her that it’s the stupidest thing she’s ever done and that he’s so disappointed in her. At this point, Stephanie, who’s already wracked with guilt, was just around 7-8 years old; even DJ had to remind her dad to go easy on her sister because “she’s just a kid.”

What makes this worse is the fact that Stephanie’s mistakes in both instances were not intentional, unlike DJ’s. Yet, for some reason, Danny was madder at his middle child. These experiences could’ve contributed to Stephanie not being too keen on her dad giving her away at her wedding. The spin-off already played on the rivalry between the sisters during Fuller House season 5 Thanksgiving episode when DJ was expecting Stephanie to mess-up, hence, why she secretly cooked her own feast.

Stephanie Wanted DJ To Have Danny

Adding to the idea that Stephanie didn’t care much about whether or not Danny will walk down the aisle, it’s also possible that she wanted DJ to have her dad since they both have parallel arcs. As previously mentioned, Fuller House tried to establish a connection with its parent series by mirroring Danny, Jesse, and Joey onto the eventual arcs of DJ, Stephanie, and Kimmy. Since Danny and DJ went through the same thing, there’s a sense of understanding between them that only they have regardless of the former’s personal feelings about his daughters.

In conjunction with that, it’s also possible that Stephanie simply sees herself more on Jesse considering that they trod similar paths. While Jesse and Becky (Lori Loughlin) didn’t go through pregnancy issues and were married first before having their twins,  her uncle’s transition from single to family life resonates with what she experienced in Fuller House. Because of this, Stephanie was more than happy for her Uncle Jesse to walk her down the aisle, while Danny did the same for DJ.
