Training Day and End of Watch filmmaker David Ayer is leaving the crime-ridden streets of Los Angeles in order to take a look at WWII history in the new war drama/thriller, FuryThe film stars Brad Pitt, Michael Peña (End of Watch), Jon Bernthal (Walking Dead) and Shia LaBeouf (Transformers) as a veteran tank crew on the European front lines, who inherit a young new member (Percy Jackson star Logan Lerman).

As the young tank recruit accompanies his new squad, he begins to learn the true face of war – and the price it exacts upon the men who fight it.

The featurette above does a nice succinct job of introducing you to the members of the tank crew. On the surface, Wardaddy (Pitt) looks like a clone of Lt. Aldo Raine from Inglourious Basterds; but in this film it seems we’ll get a lot more subtlety and depth from the war-worn character. LaBeouf’s gunner character is a rich contradiction: a man of deep faith who wields the destructive power of a tank cannon. Bernthal’s character Grady has a similar complex composition: a terrified man, whose ability to dutifully and rapidly keep up ammunition pace is the one thing keeping the tank alive in battle. Finally, Lerman’s character, Ellison, is the proverbial soft neophyte whose spirit must be hardened (hopefully not dimmed) by the experience of war.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In addition to a solid central cast, well drawn characters and some impressive-looking tank battle action, Fury features a great supporting cast that includes Scott Eastwood (Clint’s son), Jim Parrack (True Blood), Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter), Xavier Samuel (The Twilight Saga) and Kevin Vance (Sabotage).

Compared to Ayer’s last film (the thoroughly disappointing Schwarzenegger mystery/drama Sabotage), Fury looks like it has the filmmaker’s passion fully behind it. So far, it seems to have earned its place in the early race into awards season.
