Gal Gadot recently shared an image showing one of her first costume fittings as Wonder Woman. Gadot made her debut as Diana Prince in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice before starring in her well-received solo film the next year. Wonder Woman also played a role in the superhero team up movie Justice League, as well as director’s Zack Snyder’s upcoming cut of the movie, which comes out March 2021. However, right now focus is on Gadot’s performance in Wonder Woman 1984, thanks to its release in theaters and on HBO Max this weekend.

For most of the sequel, Wonder Woman dons a similar costume to the one worn in the first film. However, the colors are slightly more vibrant, appropriately so considering the movie’s 1980s setting. Wonder Woman 1984 also introduces an entirely new look to the franchise with the addition of Diana’s golden eagle armor. The new armor featured heavily in promotional materials for the film and debuts at a key point in the sequel. Despite the excitement about the golden eagle look, though, Wonder Woman ‘s usual costume is iconic for a reason.

With Wonder Woman 1984 on everyone’s minds at the moment, it’s nice to remember where it all began. It’s clear from Gadot’s post she recognized the significance of wearing a superhero costume from the jump, especially for a character as important as Wonder Woman. For many, it was a huge deal to see a female superhero on the big screen, especially in a leading role. Diana’s armor contributes to her power, which makes seeing one of Gadot’s first times wearing it that much more impactful.

Of course, audiences haven’t seen the last of Wonder Woman’s solo films. Only two days after the release of Wonder Woman 1984, Warner Bros. announced Wonder Woman 3, with both Gadot and director Patty Jenkins returning. At this point, it’s impossible to know how Diana’s costume will evolve in the trilogy’s final movie. However, it seems likely any changes to it will honor Wonder Woman‘s original look and maintain the spirit of the character. That’s what audiences experienced in Wonder Woman 1984, and there’s no reason to expect Wonder Woman 3 will be any different.
