To pick just one best character in HBO’s epic fantasy show Game of Thrones is an impossible task. Throughout eight series the fans have grown to know and love many heroes, from the truly heroic ones to the villains. One of the characters who started out unnoticed by many people and eventually gained a large fanbase is Brienne of Tarth, one of the most honorable characters in the whole of Westeros.

While Brienne might not always make the right choice, people can rely on her and she can be kind even to those she considers her enemies. Plus, she’s a badass fighter and looks great in internet memes. Let’s take a look at the best!

10 A True Hero

While Brienne herself believes that she’s not beautiful and no man could possibly find her attractive, there are still those in the show who notice her qualities and appreciate them. One of them is Tormund who likes Brienne for her fighting skills and is looking for a strong partner.

Unfortunately for Tormund, even though Brienne seems to be aware of his interest (after all, it’s difficult to overlook even if you have no experience in the love area like Brienne), she doesn’t return it. That leads to many funny situations, like this one when the unfortunate fighter caught in the middle looks like he’d rather be standing anywhere else than between the potential couple.

9 Love Goals

There are many couples in the world of Game of Thrones but rarely any of them is ideal. Even fan-favorites, such as Jon and Ygritte, or Ned and Catelyn, had their disagreements. That doesn’t change the fact that they loved each other, even though they sometimes had a strange way of showing it.

Just like Tormund seemed to love or at least strongly liked Brienne. Their mutual dynamic was so strong and intriguing that many viewers noticed it and gushed about it. Including actress Mindy Kaling who in one short tweet perfectly described a lot of people’s feelings about this almost couple – that they’re a relationship goal.

8 One Knight Stand

A lot of fantasy fans, and people in general, have a soft spot for clever puns. And as far as Game of Thrones is concerned, this one is one of the best ones, even though it’s a bit cruel towards Brienne. Brienne is in love with Jaime Lannister but even though they’re friendly, if not friends, Jaime ignores her affection.

Until he doesn’t and spends a night with her after Brienne becomes a knight. Only to crush her in the morning when Jaime decides to leave and go to King’s Landing to save his sister and lover Cersei which breaks Brienne’s heart. Ouch.

7 Sweet Satisfaction

Jaime leaving the night after Brienne became a knight is cruel on not one, but two levels. In one night, Brienne gets the two things she truly wanted… only to lose one of them in the morning. When Jaime abandons her for Cersei, he also destroys the joy Brienne experienced because of her elevation to the knight status.

Brienne has wanted to become a knight for a long time but it’s not common or even allowed for females in Westeros to serve as knights. Even though no one deserves it more than Brienne so when it finally happens, it’s similar to how one would feel after getting his well-deserved promotion at work.

6 Love Triangle

It’s debatable whether you can call the whole Brienne and Jaime and Tormund situation a love triangle since Brienne was never in love with Tormund in the first place… but for the sake of this meme, let’s pretend it is a love triangle. And it happens to be one the fans of Game of Thrones will most likely be discussing for years to come.

This meme shows that sometimes you overlook what’s right in front of you, even though it could potentially be good for you. At least if Brienne got together with Tormund, he wouldn’t abandon her for Cersei.

5 Future Child

Do you ever wonder what would happen if Brienne and Tormund got together instead of Brienne and Jaime? Well, the internet certainly does, and it even created a meme showing us what would their future child looked like. Brienne’s and Tormund’s son would inherit Brienne’s piercing eyes, Tormund’s fiery red hair…

Oh, and he’d also look like Ed Sheeran. Which is definitely not a bad thing. While their child wouldn’t be as tall as them (perhaps these genes skipped a generation), it would have an amazing singing voice which is also pretty cool. Plus, their son could spend hours singing with Podrick and maybe even create a music band with him.

4 Reality Vs. Fiction

Even though some people might tell you otherwise, flirting with people you have a crush on is an art like any other and you have to learn to master it over time if you want to be successful. Unfortunately, no-one taught Tormund this lesson so all his attempts at flirting with Brienne go up in smoke, to put it mildly.

Meanwhile, Jaime, on the other hand, certainly knows how to charm a woman. It doesn’t hurt that at the beginning of Game of Thrones, he looks a lot like Prince Charming, at least until life and other people rough him up a little.

3 Women Rule

Long gone are the times when it was nearly impossible to find a strong, independent woman in literature or on TV. Nowadays, if you want to draw inspiration from fictional heroines, you’ve got a lot of options… Brienne of Tarth included. Brienne starts out as a sort of underdog and people often underestimate her.

However, she’s stronger and more resilient than many would believe and manages to survive plenty of dangers, which is no easy task if you live in Westeros and are a fighter. So when it comes to the show’s most badass female heroes, Brienne deserves a mention as well as Arya, Ygritte, and others.

2 Oaths Everywhere

If there’s one Brienne’s characteristic every viewer of Game of Thrones notices, besides her obvious physical strength, of course, it’s her tendency to swore oaths. Unfortunately for those Brienne swears her oaths to and Brienne herself, it doesn’t always work out the way she would like.

First, she swears to protect Renly but can’t prevent his death. Later on, Brienne swears to protect both the Stark girls, Arya and Sansa, but many awful things happen to them in the show, even though Sansa probably got it worse. So if Brienne would like to keep a better piece of mind, she should probably stay away from oaths.

1 Playing It Cool

As mentioned above, Jaime Lannister is great at charming women and flirting with them… but even he has his weak moments. And a lot of them involve Brienne. When they first meet, they hate each other and aren’t afraid to show it. It’s in this time of their relationship when Jaime comes up with many creative insults aimed at Brienne but it doesn’t seem to stop her from loving him later on.

So if you’re looking for a flirting strategy, you can draw inspiration from Jaime, but there’s no doubt that many people wouldn’t recommend treating your crush like Jaime treats Brienne. After all, this world is not Westeros.
