A petition to remake Game of Thrones season 8 is still going strong some three years later, according to reports. HBO’s rating behemoth Game of Thrones first premiered on April 17, 2011 to unanimous critical acclaim, and ran for eight seasons and 73 episodes before concluding in May 2019. Adapted from the novel series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin, the show received global recognition for its complex themes, layered character, engrossing story, and stunning production values. Considered one of the greatest TV shows of all time, Game of Thrones remains popular to this day.

The storyline of the show follows several story arcs across the fictional continents of Essos and Westeros, as the Seven Kingdoms battle for political and geographical supremacy in a bid to secure the Iron Throne and rule over the entire continent of Westeros. Another story arc follows Daenerys Targaryen, the last living heir of the overthrown former King, who, exiled in Essos, begins her journey across the Narrow Sea to reclaim the throne that is rightfully hers. The third main arc focuses on the Night’s Watch, a military group that defends Westeros from threats both natural and supernatural in the far north of the continent.

Game of Thrones season 8 proved to be highly divisive and controversial, with many feeling the conclusion was rushed and underwhelming. There was a petition started to remake the final season following the airing of the last episode, and, on Change.org, that petition is still active. Almost three years since the petition was launched, it continues to attract interest, and, to date, has more than 1.85 million signatures. As of this writing, the petition was signed as recently as 23 minutes ago.

Of course, it’s always likely to be the case that any successful, popular, and long-running show is going to have its fair share of disgruntled fans by the end. When people are invested in a show, they have a clear idea in their head of how they think it should end, and it can be upsetting for fans when shows deviate from expectations like the ending of Game of Thrones did. There are always going to be sections of any fanbase that are unhappy with the conclusion of a show, and this case is no exception. Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have taken a lot of the blame for the creative direction the show took, but, as the show’s run surpassed the source material, they were forced to adapt, which would no doubt have proven to be challenging.

Game of Thrones fans unhappy with the show’s ending, who back the petition might be emboldened by the success Justice League fans had recently with a successful petition to get the Zack Snyder cut of the movie released. Indeed, fans calling for a remake or “redo” of an installment they are unhappy with is not uncommon, particularly among hugely popular franchises. Indeed, Star Wars fans petitioned to have The Last Jedi remade following the backlash against the film. Though this was unsuccessful, the follow-up movie Rise of Skywalker did attempt to retcon some of the plot points that had upset fans. It might be too late for Game of Thrones fans to get their wish, but there is hope that the end to A Song of Ice And Fire might bring a more satisfying conclusion.
