The Night’s Watch is there to protect the rest of Westeros on Game of Thrones, standing at the wall to keep out the Wildlings and the White Walkers. They sign up to serve their lives in this role, and typically, great warriors are needed to be part of this group due to the amount of fighting that is needed. However, a lot of times people end up being sent to The Wall as a punishment, which means their skill of fighting is varied.

There are certain members of this group that are very talented when it comes to combat, putting their practiced skills to work to protect others, while there are different members that simply cannot cope with the pressures of the job. But which members are the best when it comes to fighting?

11 Janos Slynt

Janos Slynt might start out his time on Game Of Thrones in the lavish area of King’s Landing, but he ultimately meets his demise as a member of the Night’s Watch. He is somebody who is happy to talk the talk and act confident, but in reality, he is weak and an unskilled fighter.

He showcases this best during the Battle Of Castle Black, where he actually proves himself to be a coward, spending his time hiding away. Janos might end up in a high position within the group, but as a fighter, he is one of the weakest options.

10 Aemon Targaryen

Aemon Targaryen is one of the smartest characters within Game Of Thrones, but he isn’t one of the best fighters. During the time of the show, Aemon is coming towards the end of his life and he serves as an advisor to the group, helping them to make key decisions when needed.

He does provide great council to other characters during tough times, but he isn’t seen to be a prime warrior. He decides to give up his rights as a Targaryen, which is a brave move, but he isn’t really the most skilled fighter of the bunch.

9 Olly

Ultimately, Olly is only a young boy in Game Of Thrones, and because of that, he’s never going to be one of the greatest fighters. For the most part, he stays out of the big fights and battles, mainly due to his age. However, he does prove that he has some ability when he kills Ygritte.

He is someone who is prepared to do whatever it takes to get what he wants and to protect the people he cares about, which is a great quality for a warrior. But when it comes to sheer fighting skills he just isn’t practiced enough yet.

8 Samwell Tarly

Samwell Tarly is well known as someone who is a thinker and not a fighter. He’s one of the smartest people within the Night’s Watch and Game Of Thrones in general. However, fighting is not something he relishes.

Jon Snow takes Samwell under his wing and helps him improve as a fighter, but even then he is never somebody who is overly impressive in that situation. However, he comes up against Wildlings and White Walkers and lives to tell the tale, doing whatever he needs to survive, and proving that when his back is against the wall, he can fight with the best.

7 Pypar

Pypar might start out as someone who is a bully, not taking kindly to the fact that Jon Snow is a better fighter than he is. But over time he grows to respect him, forming a great bond with him as they fight side by side as friends, with Pypar proving himself time after time.

He might not get featured as much as other members of the Night’s Watch, but he is a good fighter. He puts everything on the line and has a good shot with a bow and arrow, even though it’s that weapon that ends up taking him down.

6 Grenn

Grenn is in a similar position to Pypar, however, he is a slightly more experienced and skilled fighter and someone who shows a bit more leadership out of the two of them. He knows how to battle and he is an aggressive person who will fight against anybody.

He’s someone who has no problem being physical and standing up to his enemies and that is something that ultimately serves him well as the story goes on. He battles side by side with his brothers at The Wall, and that is one of his core traits.

5 Alliser Thorne

Alliser Thorne might not have been a nice person, being someone who wants to be in control of every situation. However, he is a fantastic fighter and that is something that he does deserve credit for.

Alliser’s role within the group is to train others how to fight and he’s given that role with a clear reason, because of his experience and ability with a sword. While he can be very abrupt with people in the training, when he heads out to fight Alliser always stands his own.

4 Jeor Mormont

The Mormont family are well known for their great fighting ability, and while Jeor does die during the show after being stabbed by Rast, he is still one of the greatest fighters of the Night’s Watch. He’s a true leader and someone who happily takes his men into battle with.

He helps Jon and guides him throughout the series, looking for him to follow in his footsteps. But even though he’s a little older and a step slower during the show, Jeor always stands up for himself, which is an important trait as the Lord Commander.

3 Benjen Stark

It shouldn’t be a surprise that Benjen Stark is an amazing warrior, as his family are all proven warriors who are able to battle against the very best. He’s not seen too much within the show, mainly because he is presumed to be dead beyond The Wall, but that isn’t the case.

When he does pop up, Benjen showcases what a fighter he truly is, and his ability to survive on that side of The Wall for so long shows a different side of his strength as well. He’s skilled and afraid of nobody, which makes him a great member of the Night’s Watch.

2 Eddison Tollett

Jon Snow’s right-hand man is one of his most trusted allies and with good reason. Eddison Tollett is one of the strongest fighters throughout the series, being someone who showcases his great fighting skills throughout the show.

He’s involved in several battles and he really holds his own during them all. Ed is able to battle it out with a sword and use a bow and arrow too, showcasing his versatility which makes him one of the best fighters.

1 Jon Snow

There’s no doubt that the greatest fighter in the Night’s Watch is Jon Snow. From the moment he arrives, Jon Snow is clearly a greater warrior than everybody else, which is mainly down to the fact that he is well trained by the Stark family when he grows up.

Jon Snow is able to fight against anybody on the show and he always gives a great showing. Jon kills plenty of enemies throughout the series, and he is one of the strongest fighters in the entire show, not just in the Night’s Watch.
