The Game of Thrones series finale left the audience with a lot of questions, but at least one of them has been answered by the showrunners on the DVD/Blu-ray commentaries, as it has now been confirmed that Drogon took Daenerys Targaryen’s corpse to Volantis. The last episode of Game of Thrones showed the fallout of Daenerys’ destruction of King’s Landing, resulting in her death at the hands of Jon Snow.

Once Daenerys is killed, Drogon shows up and attempts to wake her. Drogon incinerates the Iron Throne with his fiery breath, before gently taking Daenerys’ body in his claw and flying off to parts unknown. It’s unclear where exactly Drogon was heading, but Bran asks about him during the final small council scene and Sam says that the dragon was last seen flying east towards Volantis. Bran says that he might be able to find him and is taken away by Podrick. The ultimate fate of Drogon is left unclear when the show ends, but there are many Game of Thrones fan theories that have offered suggestions for why he was near Volantis.

Drogon’s destination has now been confirmed by the showrunners on the DVD/Blu-ray commentary for the final episode of the show. According to Cinemablend, the showrunners said Drogon took Daenerys’ body to Volantis, confirming Sam’s report during the final scene. This confirmation could be linked to the popular fan theory that Drogon took Daenerys to be resurrected, as there are powerful high priests of R’hllor in the city that could be capable of performing the task.

There are a lot of unanswered questions regarding Drogon’s choice to take Daenerys to Volantis. Was there a specific reason he flew there? Was someone trying to bring Drogon there in order to have Daenerys returned to life? Was the reason Bran was trying to find him in the last scene a means of trying to prevent Daenerys’ resurrection, possibly through warging Drogon? One theory states that Bran was plotting to become king for a long time and he might want to prevent any further challenges to his rule. There are still lots of things that don’t make sense about Daenerys’ final resting place and it could have been a coincidence that Drogon brought her there.

The conclusion of Game of Thrones was panned by fans and critics, to the point where even actors on the show want an alternate ending to the story. It’s highly unlikely that there will ever be a Game of Thrones sequel, especially now that HBO is focusing on the upcoming House of the Dragon prequel show, but a new series starring a resurrected Daenerys and her furious dragon, who come back to Westeros to hunt down Jon Snow might help redeem the show in the eyes of the fans.
