The type of spectacle seen on Game of Thrones was unlike any other television show up to that point. The fantasy series kept pushing the limits with what could be done on television with epic sequences. And many of the biggest sequences came from Daenerys Targaryen and her dragons.

The three dragons on the show seemed to mirror the growth of the show. The show’s popularity continued to grow just as the dragons continued to grow, and the set pieces involving these cool creatures got more and more exciting. While there was always a lot of other stuff to love, the dragons often stole the show.

10 Their Birth

It seems appropriate to begin with the dragons coming into the world, which was a game-changer for the series. After the death of Khal Drogo, Daenerys has him burned on a funeral pyre.

As the fire grows bigger, takes the three fossilized dragon eggs she received as a wedding gift and walks into the inferno. Once the fire is burned out and the smoke clears, Daenerys is found in the middle of the smoldering remains, unhurt. Even more remarkable, she has three baby dragons clinging to her.

9 Tyrion Sees Drogon

After fleeing King’s Landing, Tyrion Lannister finds himself in Essos and is quickly captured by Jorah Mormont. Jorah plans to take Tyrion to Daenerys as a gift, but they must travel through the ruins of Valyria to reach her.

As they sail through the creepy place, Tyrion sees something approaching in the distance then is in shock as Drogon flies overhead. It is the first time Tyrion has seen a dragon, and the look of amazement on his face suggests seeing the great beast changed him.

8 Burning The House Of The Undying

Even with three baby dragons, Daenerys finds herself wandering the desert in search of a new home. She and her followers come to the city of Qarth, filled with eccentric characters, including the warlocks who live in the House of the Undying.

Eventually, the warlocks steal her dragons and try to abduct her in order to strengthen their magic. Not willing to be a prisoner, Daenerys gives the command “Dracarys” and the dragons burn the warlocks and their home, proving that, though still small, they are a deadly weapon.

7 Tyrion Unchains The Dragons

When the dragons start causing trouble with the people of Meereen, even killing a small child, Daenerys makes the difficult decision to lock them up in the dungeons. However, once Tyrion joins Daenerys’ team, he realizes that is no way to treat these fantastic beasts.

With Daenerys gone, Tyrion takes it on himself to unchain the dragons. He nervously approaches them and tells them stories of how he dreamed of meeting a dragon when he was a young boy. Once they are free, the dragons seem to have welcomed Tyrion, or at least decided not to eat him.

6 Jon Meets Drogon

Daenerys has a motherly kinship with the dragons that no one else possesses. However, Jon Snow proves to be someone they warm up to surprisingly quickly. While meeting at Dragonstone with Daenerys, Drogon charges at Jon rather alarmingly.

Wisely, Jon stands his ground until the dragon is in his face. Drogon even lets Jon pet him. It’s a beautifully quiet moment that seems to hint at Jon’s true parentage and the fact that he has dragon blood in his veins as well.

5 The Night King Gets A Dragon

In an attempt to convince the rest of Westeros that the threat of the Night King is real, Jon Snow comes up with the ridiculous plan to travel Beyond the Wall and take back one of the undead soldiers.

Unsurprisingly, Jon and his comrades become stranded and Daenerys has to arrive with the dragons to save the day. This turns out to be exactly what the Night King wanted, as he kills one of the dragons then brings it back. Seeing the dragon’s blue eye open was a chilling moment.

4 Drogon Burns The Iron Throne

After a long journey, Daenerys finally secures the Iron Throne, but she does so after killing countless innocent people for no reason. Jon finally decides she has gone too far and that she cannot rule the Seven Kingdoms.

While meeting in the throne room, Jon stabs Daenerys. Drogon seems to sense his mother’s death and comes to find her body. In a rage, Drogon burns the Iron Throne, the symbol countless people have died for, before flying away into the unknown.

3 Daenerys Flies Drogon

It’s no surprise that Daenerys’ quest to dismantle the slave trade in Essos made her a lot of enemies. The Sons of the Harpy are one group that makes particular trouble for her and eventually attack while she is attending a competition at the fighting pits.

The masked killers surround Daenerys, and just when it seems like she is doomed, Drogon arrives to save the day. He torches many of the Sons of the Harpy, then Daenerys climbs on his back. As the music swells, Drogon takes off and Daenerys flies for the first time.

2 Daenerys Takes The Unsullied

Daenerys started off as a timid girl who did whatever her brother told her. By Season 3, she was a much stronger person, and that strength really comes out when she makes a deal to buy the Unsullied army.

Daenerys agrees to give the slave trader Drogon in exchange for the army. But when Daenerys gains control, she orders the Unsullied to kill the masters then orders Drogon to burn the slave trader. It is a thoroughly satisfying badass moment.

1 Loot Train Attack

When Daenerys arrives in Westeros, she has a rough start to the war. Her allies keep dropping like flies and her enemies get some big victories. But as Jaime Lannister leads his army back to King’s Landing, Daenerys takes the opportunity to show off her true power.

As the Dothraki army charges in, Daenerys rides Drogon over the Lannister army and torches them. The image of the dragon burning the convoy of wagons is one of the most iconic shots in the entire series.
