Here’s how the ending of anime movie Gantz: O plays out. Gantz is based on the best-selling manga by Hiroya Oku. The initial premise of the manga follows two characters who die in a train accident, only to awaken in a room with strangers and a mysterious black orb dubbed Gantz. They’re all forced to play a game where they have to hunt down and kill dangerous alien targets selected by Gantz, and for every successful mission they earn points; players who earn 100 points have the option of going free.

Gantz is a blood-soaked manga filled with unique monsters, flawed heroes and high-tech weaponry, and its popularity has led to a successful franchise. It spawned a hit anime series that ran for two seasons, in addition to two live-action theatrical movies, dubbed Gantz and Gantz: Perfect Answer. It also received a video game and other merchandise, but outside of Guillermo del Toro (Pacific Rim) once expressing an interest in adapting it, there’s been no attempt at an English-language movie version.

In 2016 a CGI anime adaptation called Gantz: 0 arrived, which is a standalone project. This movie follows some of the key beats of the manga, with main character Kato dying after a knife attack and waking up with a group of strangers. Gantz orders the team to go to Osaka and wipe out an invasion of monsters within a strict time limit. Against the advice of his group – who’ve all played the game before – Kato goes out of his way to save civilians who are being attacked.

Kato also befriends a woman from a rival team called Yamasaki. Kato has a young brother and is trying to get home for his birthday, while Yamasaki is fighting to get back to her son. Like Resident Evil or any other survival horror game, Gantz: 0’s wave of creatures gets progressively stronger, and even the best players from rival teams are taken out. It turns out the final monster can only be killed by surprise, so Kato acts as bait while the others prepare to snipe it. They finally succeed in defeating the beast, though Yamasaki is killed saving Kato.

In Gantz 0’s ending, the survivors are warped back to Gantz’s apartment, and Kato learns he scored 100 points for the mission. He’s presented with the option of earning his freedom and having his memory of the whole nightmare wiped, or resurrecting a dead player. Naturally, he decides to bring Yamasaki back to life. He’s then allowed to leave but Gantz will call him back at some point for another mission. Then the other players reveal the surprise plot twist that Kato played the game once before, but he didn’t remember because his memory was erased. His decision to save someone else instead of earning his freedom isn’t a surprise to them either.
