The gen:LOCK season 2 trailer teases Michael B. Jordan’s protagonist losing his mind. After ending season 1 way back in March 2019, the mecha anime-influenced series from creator Gray Haddock is finally on the cusp of releasing new episodes. The gen:LOCK season 2 premiere on HBO Max is scheduled for November 4.

The animated show takes place in a dystopian near-future in which the world has been split into two warring factions: the Polity, an international coalition that advocates for freedom of expression; and the Union, an autocratic force hell-bent on establishing a monoculture. gen:LOCK focuses on a group of Polity recruits who, in an attempt to fight back against the Union invaders, take part in the titular program that allows individuals to upload their consciousness into giant mecha known as Holons. Only a select few are compatible, leaving a small group of elite warriors the only thing standing between their vision of the future and the smothering of civilization.

In the newly released gen:LOCK season 2 trailer from HBO Max, things look dire for the Polity team, who are set to make a last stand against the Union in Los Angeles. While protagonist Julian Chase (Jordan) is ready to lead his team into battle, military leader Col. Raquel Marin (Monica Rial) hints that the gen:LOCK technology might be outdated, and that the Unity will rely on a new, possibly dangerous weapon to secure victory. The Union might see opportunity in this, however, with the footage suggesting that an assault on Chase’s mind by their leader, Brother Tate, could result in him losing his identity entirely. In addition to what looks to be an exciting continuation of the story, gen:LOCK season 2 also sees the return of the show’s illustrious voice-cast. In addition to Chase, the rest of the gen:LOCK team is voiced by Game of Thrones‘ Maisie Williams, anime veteran Kōichi Yamadera, Invasion star Golshifteh Farahani, and Orange Is the New Black‘s Asia Kate Dillon. Also in key roles are acclaimed Scottish actor David Tennant, who plays the creator of the gen:LOCK program, and Dakota Fanning as Chase’s former girlfriend and fellow pilot, Miranda Worth.

While many were initially skeptical about an American mecha anime, season 1 quickly won over fans and critics alike, who praised both the animation and the performances. With relatively little of the action included in this early look, the gen:LOCK season 2 trailer teases the characters will be at the forefront of the storytelling, which should have fans excited after waiting for so long to see the narrative continue. With HBO Max taking over distribution from Adult Swim, gen:LOCK viewers will want to make sure their subscription is in order before the premiere on November 4.
