The livestream for Version 1.6 of Genshin Impact revealed a lot about the upcoming content being added next week. In addition to Kazuha joining the game’s growing roster and a new island to explore, Version 1.6 will also introduce new summer-themed cosmetic skins. Here’s everything fans should know about the skins – and what they mean for the future of the free-to-play RPG.

Prior to the livestream, swimwear outfits for Jean and Barbara appeared online. These character skins for Genshin Impact were leaked right around the time of the Version 1.6 beta, and they were officially confirmed last week. Barbara’s outfit is called Summertime Sparkle, while Jean’s is called Sea Breeze Dandelion. Both skins are meant to commemorate Version 1.6, which is titled “Midsummer Island Adventure” and has a nautical and beach theme.

The livestream for Genshin Impact 1.6 revealed that Barbara’s outfit can be acquired for free by participating in the Echoing Tales event, which involves collecting Echoing Conch shells. However, Jean’s outfit will have to be purchased from the in-game shop. While this may be disappointing news for fans who wanted Jean’s outfit without spending real money, it also hints at the future cosmetic possibilities that could appear in Genshin Impact in future updates.

Why More Genshin Impact Cosmetics Are Likely

Most likely, the new skins for Jean and Barbara are only the beginning. Both characters are a part of the “Midsummer Island Adventure” update’s story content, and their outfits are themed around the beach and summertime. This could mean future updates of Genshin Impact will include other limited-time cosmetics themed around whatever the latest version is. For instance, the update with the Inazuma region may feature skins themed around the Electro element.

Genshin Impact is a free-to-play RPG, so adding in premium cosmetics seems like a no-brainer. Many other free-to-play games like Fortnite make vast sums of money through in-game purchases for new skins, and it makes sense that miHoYo would use this business model for Genshin Impact as well. Future skins weren’t confirmed for Genshin Impact 1.6 yet, but more cosmetics for other characters are almost assuredly coming soon – even if they aren’t a part of the next update.

The new summertime outfits for Jean and Barbara are likely just the firs step toward a larger cosmetics system in Genshin Impact. For fans who want to dress their characters differently, this is probably a well-welcomed addition, even if it means sometimes paying for new outfits.
