Since its release in September 2020, the free-to-play, open-world RPG Genshin Impact has been responsible for getting developer miHoYo’s name known in the wider community, and its newest title, Tears of Themis, is set to release soon. Breaking into a new genre, fans of Genshin Impact should be excited about seeing what miHoYo’s can do in a totally new genre.

Entirely different from Genshin Impact’s open-world action, miHoYo is venturing into new territory with an Otome-style game. Releasing on July 29, 2021, Tears of Themis will be a love-sim game wrapped in a detective adventure. The game follows a new attorney who, with the help of a “star-crossed lover”, embarks on a journey to solve a rather unusual case in a technologically modern city.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Proven through impressively constructed regions in Genshin Impact, developer miHoYo has built in-depth, rich history to further in-game storytelling, and while it remains to be seen how much of that experience will transfer over to Tears of Themis, its penchant for character design and interesting worldbuilding certainly isn’t lacking. According to miHoYo, Stellis is a city threatened by an increase of mental illness cases. There are recorded incidents of violence erupting throughout the normally gentle populace, but these reports often disappear underneath surplus data. However, someone paying attention to the unusual occurrences compiled this data in a project codenamed “X-NOTE”, aiming to “peel away layers of obscuring data and reveal the hidden truth beneath.” With a mysterious element of detective work, Tears of Themis will offer Genshin Impact fans a totally new style of gameplay to look forward to.

Tears Of Themis Characters And Mechanics Explained

While Genshin Impact reveals new characters to play periodically, Tears of Themis has already introduced the four distinct male individuals the new attorney can build a relationship with. Each has a unique job title and style, including age, birthday, height, blood type, and dialogue previews in specific character bios. The voice-overs are available in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, including alternative names to complement each language. The different love-sim options to choose from are a private detective, Luke Pearce; a top attorney, Artem Wing; a psychiatrist, Vyn Richter; and, the heir of Pax Group, Marius von Hagen.

Tears of Themis‘s mechanics revolve around both interpersonal relationships and detective work. The “Romance X Suspense” mechanic is the driving force behind the narrative of the new attorney-at-law, who is solving an unusual, mysterious case, and choosing one of the male characters as a love interest. Players will be given options for different settings and dream dates to build a love story with the chosen male lead, in addition to investigating cases through interrogation, inspection, and gathering evidence. The ability to examine clues on a crime scene will also lead to choosing evidence to eventually settle cases in court.

While the Genshin Impact 2.0 update is near release, fans should also look forward to trying something new in Tears of Themis. Available in the App Store or Google Play, miHoYo is offering a new experience unlike what people have come to expect from them. As an adventurous love-sim with detective themes, Tears of Themis is an exciting departure from the norm, and a glimpse at what miHoYo may decide to create in the future. It’s available for pre-registration now and will officially release on July 29, 2021.
