Since Genshin Impactreleased last year to become a major RPG hit, more attention has turned to developer miHoYo’s other game: Honkai Impact 3rd. This has led to a lot of speculation that the two games are actually related in some way. But are Genshin Impact and Honkai Impact 3rd really connected?

Both games have some common plot threads involving time travel and other dimensions or worlds, which always opens up the possibility for crossovers. However, many of the rumors and theories surrounding Genshin Impact‘s connections to Honkai Impact 3rd come from characters who look a lot alike. This most recently occurred when a character that looked like Yae Sakura from Honkai Impact appeared in the livestream for Genshin Impact 1.5. The character in the livestream, who is unnamed, bears a striking similarity to Yae – but there are also some noticeable differences in design.

Because character leaks for Genshin Impact occur regularly, some fans believed they’d found designs for the Inazuma region’s Archon, Baal, online. However, these character designs of the Inazuma Archon were actually of Raiden Mei – another character from Honkai Impact 3rd – in her Herrscher of Thunder form. This is the real reason crossover and connection theories appear so often: Characters in both games just look so much alike, it’s often hard to tell which game they’ve appeared in, especially for people who may not be as familiar with the lesser-known Honkai Impact.

Why Genshin Impact & Honkai Impact 3rd May Be Connected

Another common fan theory is that Genshin Impact‘s Unknown God is actually Kiana Kaslana from Honkai Impact 3rd. Much like the Yae Sakura and Raiden Mei theories and alleged leaks, this is mostly because of the similarity in designs. Characters in Honkai Impact have multiple forms, which means multiple designs, so it can often be difficult to know for sure if a character who seems to be leaked for Genshin Impact is actually a form of one of Honkai Impact‘s heroes.

Most likely, the real answer is that since the two games are made by miHoYo, have the same artists designing characters, and feature common art styles, the similarities are purely coincidental. However, given the lore in Genshin Impact and Honkai Impact 3rd, it’s certainly possible for characters to travel through different worlds and times. This means the possibility of crossovers can’t be completely denied.

For now, the presumed connections between Genshin Impact and Honkai Impact 3rd seem like coincidence; although, it does seem likely a crossover event between the two games will happen at some point. Until miHoYo confirms these characters, though, there’s no way to know for sure.
