There’s a lot of snow and ice on Dragonspire in Genshin Impact. Weather conditions intensify into blizzards as players move higher up over time, or try to climb the cliff sides as anyone might do in Liyue or anywhere else in Mondstadt. Heat sources are imperative to stay warm but don’t do much in the way of melting the majority of the ice that might be lying around. While it works on some, there are patches of ice with strange patterns completely impervious to fire altogether. Whatever is found within them is anyone’s guess, and the only way to find out is to break it apart.

These ice formations can be found just about anywhere on Dragonspire. They are usually denoted by a gradient of blue and white lines across the surface. Albedo explains to the Traveler that many of the strange conditions on Dragonspire are due to an ancient dragon felled by the Anemo Archon, Barbatos. Dragonspire is rumored to be a remnant or “culmination” of nature and the leftover corpse of the black dragon, sealed away for eternity. Here’s how players can defrost the ice brought about by these strange circumstances.

How To Defrost the Ice in Dragonspine

As mentioned before, any heat/fire sources won’t melt the ice at all. Claymore’s are also ineffective, which seems strange considering their usefulness with mining large amounts of ore quickly and breaking apart large rock formations that usually hide things from sight. In order to destroy the ice, players have to break apart and collect any of the red stones dotted along the region. These rocks are a new type of ore named Scarlet Quartz. This special ore can be found just about anywhere on the map, sometimes located near secrets and puzzles. Simply break them apart, and collect the ore after it falls. Once collected, players will be surrounded by a blood-reddish aura that slowly dissipates over time, but sticks around long enough to go for a leisurely walk. This aura provides a one-hit damage buff in battle and can be used to take out large enemies unfortunate enough to be surrounded by large amounts of Scarlet Quartz. More importantly, it is the only means to break apart the peculiar ice deposits.

There are quest specific crystals that require multiple strikes from Scarlet Quartz empowered strikes, but the striped ice formations usually only require one. Most times, Ore will grow back after a period of time to be used again. If the ore is necessary for solving a puzzle, however, it will not spawn again until the puzzle has been solved. But, if it is not usable for anything in the area, it will disappear permanently. Scarlet Quartz will always appear near large amounts of enemies, or near any ice it can be used for. Sometimes, players might have to trek a little distance away to find some. The aura will stick around long enough, but try to be quick just in case.
