As with other RPGs, players in Genshin Impact will equip their characters with a variety of weapons. There are five different types in total: Swords, claymores, polearms, bows, and catalysts, which are used for conjuring magic. Each different character can only equip one of these weapon types, and there are many ways to mix and match them to optimize their build.

Though there are many armaments to choose from, they aren’t all equal in power. Genshin Impact has locked the best weapons behind their wishing system, the gacha mechanic for this game, which makes players rely on either RNG or their wallet to get the best characters and weapons. However, there are still many reliable weapons that can be obtained without using this system. Here’s where to find one of each type, and how they help in combat.

The Best Free Weapons in Genshin Impact

Mappa Mare

  • This nautical tome will increase elemental damage dealt by its user every time they create an elemental reaction. Considering catalyst users attack using their element, mages will get a lot of mileage out of this weapon the longer the battle goes on. Especially during multiplayer combat, where allies will be frequently setting off elemental reactions with their one abilities. Mappa Mare can’t be found anywhere but can be forged once the necessary ingredients are found. Blacksmiths will need 50 crystal chunks, 50 white crystal chunks, and a northlander catalyst prototype to create one. The easiest method is to obtain one is by visiting the souvenir shop in Liyue Harbor and buying the prototype for 250 mora.

Prototype Rancour

  • A powerful sword that temporarily increases the wielder’s attack and defense every time it strikes an enemy, allowing them to better tank and deal damage to foes. Similar to Mappa Mare, this weapon can be forged using a prototype and the same materials. Except, instead of buying the prototype in Liyue, players will need to visit the souvenir shop in Mondstat instead.

Skyrider Greatsword

  • Claymore users will enjoy using this powerful weapon. Every time a hit lands, their attack will increase for a brief period. This can stack a limited number of times, so pulling off a flurry of slashes will easily buff their attack. Best of all, the Skyrider Greatsword is easy to locate. Across Liyue Harbor is the Guyun Stone Forest, an archipelago of giant rocks jutting out of the ocean. To get there, adventurers must glide across from the cliff that’s in between the harbor and Yaoguang Shoal. After finding a way to increase stamina to survive the trip, they’ll soar across the water and onto a beach. These isles have many high-level enemies, but they don’t need to be defeated. Head to the westernmost island and scale to the top to find the claymore nestled in a stone.

White Tassel

  • Many weapons in Genshin Impact have situational passives that make them stronger when certain conditions are met. What makes the White Tassal competent is that it increases the damage of regular attacks by a respectable amount without any prerequisites or drawbacks. Factor in its crit-rate and this polearm can be a great offensive force. However, finding this armament isn’t easy, as they randomly spawn in chests around Teyvat. Explorers that search far and wide will run into more chests, and in turn, higher chances to find it. The rarest type of chest, Luxurious chests, appear in shrines of depths, so players that collect shrine of depths keys will have plenty of chances to find this flashy polearm.

Messenger

  • Bows allow archers to aim at targets with pinpoint accuracy, and the Messenger rewards precision with increased damage. This only applies to charged shots, but because bows charge up while the players take aim, this passive is easy to activate. Like with the White Tassel, this weapon can only be found in chests. But because that doesn’t cost any money or primogem resources, it’s much easier for F2P players to obtain.
