Ghost of Tsushima’s New Game Plus addition was a long-awaited game mode that players were hoping to acquire after beating the game for the first time. When New Game Plus dropped with the release of the Ghost of Tsushima Legends online multiplayer mode, many fans were eager to dive back into the story mode using their fully upgrade Jin Sakai with all his techniques, tools, and every piece of armor they had obtained throughout their journey across the massive map of Tsushima.

A sizeable quantity of customization accessories could be acquired if players had acquired enough flowers to sell. There were also many Pillar of Honor sites for which players could obtain new sword sheathes and grips for Jin. Where New Game Plus modes in many games let players keep their gear and resources to continue upgrading what they couldn’t on their first playthrough, Sucker Punch additionally added a new shop menu where even more accessory items could be purchased.

Ratchet & Clank allows for Omega weapon upgrades, and some games may grant new weapons or items on a New Game Plus run. God of War also does this by adding extra armors that can be acquired, and the Demon’s Souls remake for PS5 encourages multiple runs to acquire every item in the game. With all the new content added in Ghost of Tsushima’s New Game Plus, Jin can be customized even further with new hats, masks, outfits, and alternate outfit colors. However, there is also another reward that is quite unique, but can only be used for a limited time during New Game Plus runs.

A Unique New Game Plus Reward On A Ticking Clock

This unique reward is a new jet-black horse with a red-orange mane that Jin begins the game with. In Ghost of Tsushima’s New Game Plus, players will skip past the Battle of Komoda Beach, and instead begin riding through the tall white pampas grass atop a new steed. Unlike a first playthrough, where Jin chooses his horse’s name and color, this unique horse is given to players right away, though a new name can be chosen before beginning.

This horse’s color isn’t an option in a first playthrough and stands out from the other color variants. However, the New Game Plus horse’s life is short-lived. Jin’s horse suffers irreparable injuries and collapses shortly after Jin makes his escape to the north as part of the story – a truly heartbreaking scene, as by this point, players have spent many hours with their steed.

The problem comes when it’s time for players to choose a new replacement horse, only to find they can only choose from Ghost of Tsushima’s default horse color options: white, grey, black, brown, or chestnut (if they got the digital deluxe edition). Unfortunately, the uniquely colored horse is nowhere to be found. While Yuna does say, “I can’t replace what you lost,” it does feel as if New Game Plus players were cheated out of reobtaining a horse variant that sticks out compared to the first playthrough.

With all the new customization options added to Ghost of Tsushima’s New Game Plus, it’s a bit of a letdown that there weren’t any other new color variants for horses. At the very least, the same horse color could’ve been an option to choose from again, because while the armor styles and colors are constantly changing, Jin’s horse ultimately stays the same.
