Ghostbusters: Afterlife making-of video hints at a deleted scene featuring some of the original movie’s actors. Several stars of the 1984 Ghostbusters returned to take a bow in the 2021 legacy sequel written and directed by Jason Reitman.

Reitman’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife indeed revolved heavily around the legacy of one particular original Ghostbuster, Egon Spengler, who was of course played by the late Harold Ramis. But the movie also makes room for brief-but-memorable appearances by Dan Aykroyd’s Ray Stantz, Bill Murray’s Peter Venkman, Ernie Hudson’s Winston Zeddemore and Annie Potts’ Janine Melnitz. And though she didn’t appear in the main story, Sigourney Weaver’s Dana Barrett also got her own cameo in an amusing mid-credits scene with Murray.

Those cameos may have been enough to satisfy fans of the original Ghostbusters but it appears more footage was actually shot featuring three of the first movie’s stars. A just-released Ghostbusters: Afterlife making-of video drops the hint as it shows a brief glimpse of Weaver and Potts having a conversation in a scene that did not appear in the finished film. This hint makes it hard to guess the actual circumstances of Weaver’s Dana and Potts’ Janine meeting up again after so many years, but a later shot does show them with Murray’s Venkman, so presumably this was a drop-in by Janine to the married couple. Of course there is another Afterlife post-credits moment featuring Janine, where she has a rather lengthy chat with Winston right before he is shown opening up the classic Ghostbusters fire station for the Ecto-1, in a scene that appears to be a set-up for another sequel. Weaver’s Dana Barrett as previously mentioned has her own mid-credits moment where she subjects Peter Venkman to the ESP experiment he performed on his students in the original Ghostbusters, and gives him a taste of his own medicine by shocking him multiple times.

Hints of another unseen Ghostbusters: Afterlife scene featuring stars from the original movie can only make one wonder how much footage was shot with the old cast and whether any of these scenes will see the light of day. Surely Ghostbusters fanatics would love to see all that was shot of the original stars, even if it’s as random and seemingly meaningless as the Dana Barrett/Pete Venkman mid-credits scene. Dana and Janine of course didn’t have much to do with each other in the original movie, but as the two main female cast members, they do share a certain special place in Ghostbusters lore. It’s likely that at some point in the future these deleted scenes will be released so all the nostalgic Ghostbusters: Afterlife reunion moments can be shared with fans who waited so long to see their favorites back together again.
