With Snake Eyes now in theaters, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and G.I. Joe: Retaliation find themselves being the lambasted subjects of the latest Honest Trailer. Snake Eyes hit theaters in July, and it continues the disappointing run of the G.I. Joe brand at the box office. While the original film attempted to set up the world of the Joes, each subsequent sequel has gone about reworking that setup, making for a sloppy series that never quite knew what it wanted to be.

Screen Junkies has released a new Honest Trailer that targets Rise of Cobra and Retaliation. The 6-minute trailer wastes no time calling the first film a prologue to the G.I. Joe franchise before taking a shot at Retaliation for being another prologue in its attempt to reinvent the franchise. It then jokes that the franchise is getting another prologue again with the prequel origin story in Snake Eyes. The trailer delves into the problematic elements of the series by labeling it “Team America, but without the jokes.” Check out the Honest Trailer below:

The Honest Trailer pokes fun at all the criticisms the G.I. Joe franchise has endured over the years as it breaks down the repeated formula put in place due to the success of the Transformers franchise, with generic military characters, beautiful women, and CGI nonsense. As the trailer says, “Ride along with two stories that feel like they were stolen from a little boy’s notebook margins.” With nothing off-limits, the trailer takes a hard look at the poor representation of female characters who feel shoehorned in, forced into “sexy” outfits, and can only fight other female characters. As the Honest Trailer lays into The Rise of Cobra and Retaliation for “not even doing American propaganda right,” it’s clear that the G.I. Joe films have missed the mark with fans.
