Gilmore Girls: 10 Fan-Ships We Wish Were Real

Gilmore Girls gave viewers years’ worth of intriguing relationships. Fans continue to spend their time thinking about all of Lorelai and Rory’s various romances, including the ones that got away. As fulfilling (or disappointing) as canon relationships are on Gilmore Girls, there is a world of ships that fans have dreamed up independently of the series.

In some cases, there is no denying the chemistry. Other ships might sound a little unexpected, but they could really work. What are the fan ships that should have actually happened on the show?

10 Sookie & Luke

It’s hard to imagine a world without Sookie attached to Jackson (or Luke attached to Lorelai), but such a world did exist. Redditor u/rav1874 thinks Sookie and Luke would work for the obvious reasons–their shared love for cooking and their differing approaches to it. Luke and Sookie already have little banters about their cooking styles. They would be such an interesting match, especially since they’re both such fantastic people overall.

9 Paris & Rory

Paris and Rory have a satisfying arc as friends on the series, but some fans wonder if there’s more to explore. Rory meets Paris at Chilton and finds that the peculiar girl will always be a part of her life. There’s a spark between Paris and Rory when they have heated debates (or when they kiss on spring break), but they also learn how to be compassionate towards one another without constantly arguing. With their twin intellect and determination, these women could conquer the world together. They might butt heads once in awhile, but they know how to work through their problems.

8 Miss Patty & Taylor

Miss Patty has made fans laugh with her manifesto on the sensuality of fruit, so it’s strange that her love life isn’t explored more on the show. One fan predicted that the 2016 revival would present Miss Patty married to Taylor Doose and said it would be uncomfortable. It could also be just right for those characters.

Unfortunately, this ship never saw the light of day. Miss Patty and Taylor might seem like polar opposites, but if opposites attract, they could be great together. Their collaboration on Town Hall meetings also makes the romance feel like a no-brainer. Taylor and Miss Patty could bring each other a lot of happiness while keeping Stars Hollow in its best shape.

7 Lane & Jess

Reddit user u/rav1874 made an excellent point about Jess and Lane: “Totally would be here for Lane and Jess to hook up and take that back-of-the-classroom pen conversation up a notch. Plus imagine the hilarity of Mrs. Kim and Jess as mother and son-in-law.” The Redditor is not wrong. That conversation between Lane and Jess at Stars Hollow High should have lasted longer, and Jess would be a comical son-in-law for Mrs. Kim. Jess and Lane are most compatible in their varied artistic interests. They both consume and create in exciting and ever-evolving ways. With Lane’s music and Jess’s lyrics, this ship is just too good to be true.

6 Lorelai & Town Troubadour

The fan who notices Lorelai and the Town Troubadour’s potential is, indeed, an insightful fan. It’s a shame that Lorelai doesn’t have the opportunity to interact more with the Town Troubadour. She appreciates music, he has a wealth of music to give, and they could both benefit from a steady relationship. The Troubadour could write songs about Lorelai’s love for winter, and Lorelai would keep his life exciting with endless movie nights and insightful conversations at Luke’s. If she could forget about Luke, that is.

5 Mrs. Kim & Taylor

Redditors had fun discussing the possibility of a ship between Mrs. Kim and Taylor Doose.  The suggestion came from u/losoba, who said, “If the revival hadn’t created a Mr. Kim, and Lane didn’t have a father, Mrs. Kim and Taylor would’ve been a very interesting couple! I think they would’ve hit it off.” The user also noted that Mrs. Kim’s law-abiding nature matches well with Taylor’s obsession with town ordinances. Then, u/IntrinsicSurgeon chimed in: “Omg, I always thought a spontaneous love affair between Taylor and Mrs. Kim would be awesome! And maybe like Rory or Lorelei or someone discovering it and Mrs. Kim trying to do damage control.”

4 Rory & Marty

There’s a reason there is an entire Reddit thread on Rory and Marty. The Yale friends could have taken their relationship to more romantic level, but Rory apparently wasn’t interested in Marty that way. Some think Marty is too safe, boring, or predictable, but perhaps Rory needed more stability in her life than what Jess, Dean, or Logan could offer. As u/Ifthiswasamovie astutely wrote in the thread, “If GG was real life, Rory would definitely have dated Marty…Of course, that makes for bad tv…”

3 Lane & Brian

Another great alternative for Lane is Brian from Hep Alien. U/MichaellasKitchen noted on Reddit that Brian was considerate and sweet. There are a couple of comparisons between Rory and Marty and Lane and Brian on the thread. More than anything, it seems odd that Lane and Brian never got a chance to see if they had any real chemistry beyond being friends and bandmates.

2 Paris & Jess

Thinking back to the scant encounters between Paris and Jess, those two are actually a great pair. Rory brings them together, and Jess and Paris find it pretty easy to discuss literature (specifically of the Beat poet era) in a meaningful way. Jess’s brooding nature and Paris’s perfectionism could be rather exciting. As u/rav1874 noted on Reddit, Paris and Jess would be especially appropriate after the revival, when he could be a stepdad. Jess and Paris would play to each other’s strengths both in their professional and personal lives.

1 Sherry & Kirk

Without any explanation, u/viol8er shared that Sherry and Kirk should be Shirk. Brilliant. Sherry leaves Christopher and G.G., so if Kirk never found Lulu, he and Sherry could have a nice life together. Sherry doesn’t like to be tied down, but neither does Kirk. His chosen location of Stars Hollow might be negotiable. After all, the man has held more jobs than anyone in town. It’s clear that he likes change, and Sherry could offer him that. Kirk is odd, but Sherry might highlight his kindness. In the end, Kirk could also encourage Sherry to take a more active role in G.G.’s life.
