Lane Kim and Zack Van Gerbig met in season 3 of Gilmore Girls when Lane joined his band, Hep Alien, with Dave and Brian. As nice as Zack was, Lane always had heart eyes for Dave. The two began dating on the down-low before he left Stars Hollow for college. With Lane a single woman, she soon realized she had feelings for Zack. They became romantic after Zack realized he liked Lane too.

Down the road, Lane and Zack became serious in their own unique way. They got engaged, married, and she got pregnant on their honeymoon. The couple had twins but continued to play in their band because it was very “rock ‘n’ roll.” But even though these two were endgame, fans weren’t always sold on this couple.

Mrs. Kim was a tough nut to crack. She was a very religious woman who wanted Lane to follow in her footsteps. Boys were distracting and Lane would most definitely not date around. However, after Mrs. Kim got to know Lane’s former boyfriend Dave, she came around to trusting Lane’s decision-making.

When Lane and Zack became an item, Mrs. Kim hated it — especially since they were living together with Brian. But when she realized how serious Zack was about Lane, she put him through a few tests to see if he had what it took to date her daughter. Luckily for him, he passed.

7 They Never Made Sense: Zack Was Too Petty

Zack was petty, irresponsible, and a whiner. He neglects Lane, dismisses her feelings until he’s scolded, and doesn’t know how to voice his feelings. What’s worse is he let his emotions get the best of him when their bandmate, Brian, wrote a song about Lane. Zack became so jealous that he butchered the band’s chance at a major success. Lane didn’t even know why Zack was acting like a child. He never told her that it upset him; he just lashed out instead.

Perhaps viewers are too hard on Zack and Lane. Could it be that music is the one thing that brings them together and says everything they’re feeling rather than them saying it? A Year in the Life proved that music was the one thing that saved them. Zack and Lane were still together and thriving with their two children. But the couple still had not achieved the musical success they wanted. It left a sour taste in fans’ mouths. Nevertheless, music was enough for them.

5 They Never Made Sense: Did She Still Love Dave?

Things changed for Lane when she met Dave Rygalski. She always dreamed of being in a band and rocking out with like-minded people without being yelled at by her mom. Dave was the one who invited her to join their band and it opened up all kinds of doors (emotionally) for Lane. She slowly fell in love with him and he showed similar feelings. He even worked hard to be liked by Mrs. Kim!

Sadly, Dave eventually went to California for college and never came back. This led Lane into the arms of Zack, which is why fans don’t think their relationship is authentic.

4 They Were Great Together: He Respected Her Religion

It took some time for Zack to realize he liked Lane but when he did, things became more comfortable between the two; the tension between them released. And even though Lane was no longer living with her mother and was able to be a free woman, her religion was still a big part of her life. She always assumed she’d wait until marriage to lose her virginity, but she had to break that news to Zack when he tried to seduce her.

He was frustrated that he had to wait but he respected Lane’s morals. His respect showed up again on their wedding day when Lane’s grandmother unexpectedly flew in. The couple had to be involved in a Buddhist wedding on top of their planned wedding but they both carried on in stride.

3 They Never Made Sense: Did They Have Anything In Common?

Lane was a great student, a hard worker, and a responsible young woman. She stayed true to herself when she dared to leave her mother’s house and tried to be independent. Zack, however, didn’t share the same character traits. He was lazy, petty, and compared everything to rock ‘n’ roll.

Besides the physical attraction, jamming together, and cohabitation, what did Lane and Zack have in common? What did they about when they weren’t playing music or chasing around the kids?

2 They Were Great Together: They Came Together For Their Babies

Although Lane and Zack were married, they were not expecting to have babies in Stars Hallow so soon. Marriage was new for them and they needed time to get used to their new arrangement. But as soon as they got back from their honeymoon, Lane became ill and assumed it was from the food they ate while traveling. She soon found out that she was pregnant. The pregnancy was a shock to both of them but they came together and handled it like adults for the first time.

1 They Never Made Sense: Both Were Immature

Fans were fuming at Lane’s storyline in season 7 of Gilmore Girls and in A Year in the Life. Both Lane and Zack felt too immature for the life they lined up for themselves. What would have worked better is if they remained a couple and toured the country together with their band.

Instead, they were forced to grow up to appeal to Mrs. Kim and became parents before they were ready. They didn’t talk about anything serious and didn’t seem to have a deep connection. They always felt too young for what they were doing.
