Gina Carano was almost awarded her own Star Wars spinoff. The former  MMA star has moved into acting and appeared in some Hollywood projects such as appeared in Deadpool, Fast & Furious 6, and Haywire. The Mandalorian, however, was her first big recurring role where she played Cara Dune, and now, she has lost that due to some unsavory social media posts.

On the heels of her most recent Instagram updates about Jeffrey Epstein and the Holocaust, Disney and Lucasfilm has booted the budding actress out of The Mandalorian and other Star Wars projects. It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time that Carano made some questionable and even downright offensive statements online including making transphobic jokes. She also repeatedly floated conspiracy theories regarding the efficacy of using masks amidst the coronavirus pandemic, as well as, the recent US presidential elections. Apparently, had it not been for these remarks, she may have already been confirmed to star on her own Star Wars offshoot.

THR is now reporting that during Disney’s Investor Day 2020, Lucasfilm was supposed to announce another spinoff that would be focused on Carano’s Cara Dune. However, her controversial social media posts back in November changed all that, with the company ultimately not doing it. No additional information was given on what this scrapped project was going to be, but with The Mandalorian spawning a string of offshoots, it’s not outside the realm of possibility that it could connect to other upcoming series, particularly Rangers of the New Republic.

What’s unknown now is how The Mandalorian season 3 will handle Cara Dune’s character. The character has recently established herself as the Marshal in Nevarro, which could be a set-up for her now-canceled spinoff. While the show mainly focused on Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin, she and Greef Karga played a pivotal part in Mando’s journey that it’s safe to say that even if he no longer has Baby Yoda with him, he would still reunite with his friends from time to time. Of course, there’s always the chance that The Mandalorian can simply recast the role and not make a big fuss about it since everyone pretty much knows what happened to Carano.

Assuming that this is going to be the case, Lucasfilm can still move forward with their initial plans for a Cara Dune spinoff. While Carano has played the character for two seasons of the Star Wars show now, she hasn’t really made the character her own, partially because there’s really not much focus on her in The Mandalorian. The character’s involvement has been mostly because she’s formed a bond with Din and Baby Yoda; not so much has been revealed about her story, although clearly, Disney and Lucasfilm had plans to further explore that.
