Here’s how Goblin Slayer connects to the 2016 video game reboot of Doom. Goblin Slayer is a popular anime series based on the light novel series by Kumo Kagyu and Noboru Kannatsuki. The fantasy show follows a priestess who joins up with the titular character, who has made it his mission in life to kill as many goblins as possible. While on the surface Goblin Slayer looks like something of a standard fantasy anime with all the tropes and character types that entails, it’s clear from the first episode it’s something darker.

The priestess’ very first quest in Goblin Slayer’s opening episode ends up being a horrific massacre that also became infamous for its use of sexual assault. Despite this, the series has proven very popular since it debuted and was one of Crunchyroll’s most-streamed shows in 2018. Goblin Slayer has since spawned a movie spinoff with Goblin’s Crown, but while a second season is on the way, there’s no confirmed airdate for it yet.

After a long wait, the Doom video game series received a glorious rebirth in the 2016 title of the same name. While the game did feature a storyline, players were actively encouraged to either ignore or dismiss it as they rushed around combat arenas ripping and tearing monsters to pieces. Doom 2016 essentially made the player character the Doom Slayer the monster, as he laid waste to hordes of demons. The game was praised for its slick, fluid action that evolved the classic FPS formula. Goblin Slayer and Doom Slayer have a lot in common too, including their job titles and being helmeted monster killers who rarely speak; they’re also both played by actor Brad Hawkins.

Doom 2016 portrays Doom Guy as a nigh-unstoppable force, who largely ignores the bigger picture in favor of stomping on demon skulls. Brad Hawkins provided the motion capture for the Doom Slayer, and it appears someone involved with Goblin Slayer must have been a fan of the game. Hawkins was later cast as the title character for Goblin Slayer’s English dub, and it’s hard to imagine a performer better suited to the task.

When it comes to Goblin Slayer vs Doom Slayer, the former is certainly a little more talkative and in touch with his humanity than the latter. That said, few characters can beat Doom’s main hero in a fight, so it’s for the best they have never come to blows. Brad Hawkins playing both characters is a fun link between Doom 2016 and Goblin Slayer, and one that followers of both series definitely appreciated.
