The Leviathan Axe is the main weapon used by Kratos in God of War, and it can only be upgraded after finding more Frozen Flames and speaking with either Brok or Sindri. Brok and Sindri originally designed the Leviathan Axe long before the events of God of War (2018) began, and it was first made for and given to the God of War‘s wife, Faye. Feeling overwhelming guilt for the destruction caused by Thor and his hammer, Mjolnir, the Leviathan Axe was designed to be a counter-weapon and features some similar powers.

Throughout God of War (2018), Kratos can improve the abilities of the Leviathan Axe to increase its efficiency with Kratos’ Light, Heavy, and Throw attacks. As Kratos finds new Frozen Flames, the Leviathan Axe can be upgraded to a new level for no additional cost. These upgrades allow players to select new skills for Kratos to learn with the Leviathan Axe, such as the Precision Throw Combo and the Leviathan’s Fury.

There are a total of five Frozen Flames that players can find throughout the God of War story, and they’re scattered across the available realms. The Frozen Flames are tied to specific events throughout the story, and often require players to defeat some sort of boss beforehand. Additionally, the final Frozen Flame can only be obtained after players beat the main story, regardless of the difficulty they choose to play on.

How To Get Every Frozen Flame In God Of War

Players can find each Frozen Flame location in God of War through the following parts of the story:

  • First Brok Encounter: The first Frozen Flame is earned after Kratos and Atreus help Brok move his animal across the bridge to set up shop.
  • First Sindri Encounter: The next Frozen Flame is acquired once Kratos and Atreus defeat an ogre as a mini-boss shortly after meeting Sindri for the first time.
  • Mountain Mine: The room with the elevator that brings Kratos and Atreus to the God of War mountain summit contains another troll that must be defeated to earn the third Frozen Flame.
  • The corpse of Thamur the Giant: This Frozen Flame is found after Kratos and Atreus defeat the bosses at the end of The Magic Chisel quest.
  • Niflheim Frozen Flame: The final Frozen Flame can only be found once the main story is completed. In exchange for a Chilling Mist, Sindri will sell the final Frozen Flame to Kratos. The Chilling Mist is located in a chest found in the center of the Niflheim maze in God of War, and the chest costs 5,000 Mist Echoes to open.

Continue bringing each Frozen Flame back to either Brok or Sindri in order to further upgrade the God of War’s Leviathan Axe. In addition to the level of the Leviathan Axe increasing after each Frozen Flame is applied, Kratos’ overall level will increase as well in God of War.

God of War is available on PS4 and PS5, and will be available for PC on January 14, 2022.
