Toho brought back Anguirus and equipped him with two new powers in Godzilla: Singular Point. Anguirus was one of several classic Toho kaiju included in the Netflix anime, with some of the others being Rodan, Manda, and Jet Jaguar.

It’s been years since Toho has done much with Anguirus, who has a reputation as a key ally of Godzilla. The monster, who was a one-time opponent of the King of the Monsters in 1955’s Godzilla Raids Again, was reimagined as a heroic figure and a friend to Godzilla in Destroy All Monsters. In the movie, Anguirus joined Godzilla and the other Monster Island residents in taking down King Ghidorah. Later, Toho paired Anguirus with Godzilla for a two-on-two showdown with Ghidorah and Gigan in Godzilla vs. Gigan. Following an unfortunate beatdown at the hands of Godzilla’s robotic counterpart in the beginning of 1974’s Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, Anguirus experienced a long absence from the franchise which lasted until Godzilla: Final Wars in 2004, where he received a very brief role.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Anguirus, complete with an imposing new look, returned to the spotlight in Godzilla: Singular Point. In episode 5, it was revealed that his impressive new design wasn’t the only thing different about him in the anime. Singular Point’s Anguirus has two new powers unique to all other versions of the kaiju. By quickly vibrating his spikes and manifesting a shield of energy, Anguirus can easily deflect incoming ranged attacks, such as bullets and missiles. A military truck attacking Anguirus was destroyed by the ricochet caused by the spikes on Anguirus’ shell.

According to Yun, one of the show’s human protagonists, Anguirus getting into position to deflect the bullets before being fired upon is a result of a second power. Apparently, the creature can somehow see the future, which is something that he nor any other Toho kaiju has been able to do in the past. It would seem that Anguirus can see at least a few moments ahead, allowing him to know the trajectory of the bullets and precisely when and where on his body to vibrate his spikes. It was for this reason that the military had no chance against him, and why Jet Jaguar had to use high-powered, unblockable close-range attacks to finally kill him.

Anguirus seeing the future is totally new to the character and the franchise, and while it’s unlikely to be incorporating into any future Toho movies that include the creature, it fits into the science fiction world established in the series, where time travel is a commonly discussed element and an integral part of the show’s story. It’s possible that if Godzilla: Singular Point season 2 introduces a second member of Anguirus’ species through another singular point, more about his mysterious nature and where his powers come from will be discovered.
