The Power Rangers will be taking on Godzilla with their Dragon Zord in a crazy new crossover from IDW Publishing and Boom! Studios. Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is the match-up many fans may have imagined growing up. Now, it will be a stunning reality in 2022.

The Power Rangers have been having numerous adventures within comics as of late, with several series running concurrently from IDW. However, this upcoming crossover may be one of their biggest challenges yet. In the past, the team of heroes has encountered the Justice League and while they faced off briefly, they eventually teamed up. Godzilla is a completely different story.

Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, announced by IGN, will have the creative team of Cullen Bunn, Freddie E. Williams II, and Andrew Dalhouse. Cullen Bunn previously wrote Godzilla: Cataclysm, which was released in 2014. This series will also include classic villain, Rita Repulsa, who will be responsible for beginning the confrontation with Godzilla according to the series synopsis, included below, along with the main and variant covers for the series (featuring the Power Rangers’ iconic Dragonzord).

When Rita Repulsa uses an ancient artifact to transport herself to a universe without Power Rangers, she finds herself in a world with aliens, kaiju, and… Godzilla! Hoping to annihilate this new foe, Rita hurls her own terrible creatures into battle. But she never expects that the Rangers have followed her to this alternate reality, pitting the Dinozords themselves head-to-head with the King of the Monsters!

This kaiju/mech match-up is a battle for the ages, though it could lead to one of the strangest – and coolest – team-ups, should Godzilla target Rita Repulsa and aid the Power Rangers in defeating her.

Cullen Bunn, series writer, says:

I am honored to bring two iconic franchises like Godzilla and the Power Rangers together. I’ve been a massive Godzilla fan since before I could read, and my love for the King of Monsters has never faded in all those years. Likewise, I’ve always loved Tokusatsu superheroics, and vividly remember watching the first episode of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers when it came out. This is a crossover that I suspect will take readers by surprise – but it makes complete sense!

Freddie Williams, series artist for Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, added:

This will be the biggest, most stratospheric crossover I’ve ever drawn! It’s the combination of so many big genres: Giant Monsters vs. Mechs, martial arts vs. science and magic, with lots of collateral destruction! I’ve been watching Mighty Morphin Power Rangers episodes and Godzilla films to submerge my brain space, and have been reminded how fantastic and charming these designs are and how much fun prior creators had with their designs. I’m excited to contribute to the long legacies of these franchises!

Williams is no stranger to crossover comic series. He has previously worked on the IDW/DC partnership comic, Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, from 2015, as well as the DC crossover series, He-Man/Thundercats, in 2016. This will be Williams’ latest crossover and it is sure to be one of the most explosive. This is a dream for many fans. While it may seem crazy to some, it is actually a rather fitting combination. Once the Dragonzord is involved, it inherently becomes a classic mech vs. kaiju story, similar to Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974) or Pacific Rim (2013). The Power Rangers have faced kaiju-sized foes before, but Godzilla is a classic monster that would likely put those foes to shame. Fans can check out this incredible crossover from IDW Publishing and Boom! Studios when Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers releases in March 2022.
