The alien origins of Ghidorah in Godzilla: King of the Monsters could create a pathway for the three-headed dragon’s return to the MonsterVerse. After Ghidorah’s second battle with Godzilla, Monarch came to the shocking discovery that Ghidorah, just like the monster from Toho’s movies, is an alien.

Apparently, Ghidorah traveled to Earth thousands of years ago and lost to Godzilla. He was frozen in Antarctica until Jonah (Charles Dance) and his group of eco-terrorists managed to awaken him from his slumber with the help of Emma (Vera Farmiga) and the Orca. Ghidorah was part of their plan to unleash the Titans gradually, but he surprised everyone by trying to terraform the planet. Fortunately, the Earth was saved when Godzilla arrived to stop him. Thanks to a last-minute upgrade from Mothra, Godzilla destroyed Ghidorah with his nuclear pulse attack.

Though Ghidorah died, a potential return was teased when his severed head from the second fight was shown in a post-credits scene. But how could Ghidorah return from just a head? Comments from King of the Monsters director Mike Dougherty indicate that it’s his alien origins that pave the way for him to rise again. Dougherty said in an interview that “anything is possible” with Ghidorah’s biology, especially since “he’s not something that subscribes to our laws of nature.” Dougherty says that because of his origins, it’s not even clear if he really is dead [via FreshFiction]. Ghidorah growing back from nothing more than a head wouldn’t make sense for any Earth-born creature, but as Dougherty points out, Ghidorah’s biology could be unlike anything people are familiar with.

Ghidorah’s alien backstory is a key part of his character in the MonsterVerse. In fact, it was instrumental to his role in King of the Monsters. It was the human villains’ lack of understanding regarding what King Ghidorah actually is that caused their plan to spiral out of control. They believed that Ghidorah would obey the laws of nature, but didn’t realize that as an alien, he didn’t care about protecting the planet. That’s why he tried to terraform it in his image. His status as an outsider is what ultimately what made him such a tremendous threat to the Earth. Ghidorah’s alien physiology is likely the reason for his ability to regenerate his missing head as well. This would also explain his energy absorption ability that he used to overpower Godzilla.

If Ghidorah did come back, it’s possible that he could either be restored completely, or he would be like his Toho counterpart from the Heisei series and become Mecha-King Ghidorah. It could be that despite his regeneration ability, he’ll need some help from the humans to make a full return to the MonsterVerse. As for when it could happen, the resurrection of the False King could take place in Godzilla vs. Kong, where he could work as an ally of Mechagodzilla against the title characters. Alternatively, Legendary could reserve him for Godzilla 3 as a side villain.
