The gameplay of an independent kaiju game, inspired by giant monster franchises such as Godzilla, has been showcased by its developer. Kaiju is a popular genre of Japanese media, such as Godzilla and Gamera, which feature enormous supernatural monsters. The genre has also made the leap into American cinema with films such as King Kong and Pacific Rim.

Godzilla is a massive pop culture icon, with the unstoppable King of the Monsters being recognizable in countries all across the world. This popularity has inevitably led to several Godzilla video games. In fact, Godzilla’s video game history dates back to the industry’s earliest days, with 1994’s Super Godzilla bringing the colossal kaiju to the Super Nintendo console. A notable series of successful fighting games starring Godzilla and his associates were later released throughout the early 2000s. Beginning with 2002’s Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee, the trilogy carried on with 2004’s Godzilla: Save the Earth, and finally 2007’s Godzilla: Unleashed.

New gameplay footage of the kaiju-inspired indie game Excidio The Kaiju Game was recently revealed via the game’s Twitter account. The upcoming title will put players in the shoes of a massive monster named Excidio who can smash through cities with ease. Ragdoll physics will be used to simulate the large-scale destruction, and the game will reportedly feature different objectives for players to complete. Excidio The Kaiju Game, developed by ZoranGameDev, is currently available for purchase as an early access title.

While high-quality kaiju games are quite rare, Godzilla himself has made guest appearances in many different games. PUBG Mobile added a Godzilla Mode back in April, allowing players to battle against the King of the Monsters himself. The unique game mode sets the tyrant lizard loose in a major city, with players tasked with surviving the attack and trying to bring him down. Getting too close to Godzilla results in instant death, demonstrating the power of the iconic kaiju. Smaller monsters are also spawned during the mode, giving players a target that can actually be killed by conventional means. In addition to official crossovers, Godzilla is also brought into many games through fan-made mods. A recently-released Godzilla Mod for Grand Theft Auto V transforms players into the legendary creature, who comes fully equipped with a powerful atomic breath attack.

Few games can put players in the oversized shoes of a powerful kaiju, with many Godzilla titles acting as fighting games instead. However, Excidio The Kaiju Game uses impressive destruction physics to accurately display the extreme power of a pissed-off kaiju. While the game is being made independently and is still in an early access state, giant monster fans should be keeping their eye on this destructive project.
