Godzilla’s actions in Godzilla vs. Kong may have laid the groundwork for a new Hollow Earth challenger to fight Kong in a future MonsterVerse movie. A sequel to Kong: Skull Island remains unconfirmed, but if it did happen, it would most assuredly center on Kong’s new role in the MonsterVerse. Kong is now the alpha of his new home, the Hollow Earth.

The MonsterVerse opened up a whole new corner of its world in Godzilla vs. Kong when it took audiences on a trip inside the Hollow Earth, the original home of the titular Titans’ ancestors. Since one of Ghidorah’s storms overtook Skull Island, Kong was forced to relocate to the Hollow Earth, where he finally acquired his “King” title. Down in the Hollow Earth, he no longer has to be concerned about fighting Godzilla, but it makes sense that there could be other monsters out there interested in challenging him. After all, he was accosted by a pair of Warbats as soon as he entered the area. Though they weren’t shown, much stronger Titans could be lurking somewhere in Kong’s new home.

One fan has put forward a theory that when Kong’s next adversary emerges, it’ll be Godzilla’s fault. This argument is based on what happened in Hong Kong. In response to Kong activating the Hollow Earth core with the axe, Godzilla blasted a hole all the way through to the Hollow Earth with his atomic breath. The theory suggests that the blast could have awakened a hidden Hollow Earth Titan, such as King Caesar [via Reddit]. The dog-like kaiju from Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla is arguably the most popular choice for Kong 2’s villain and a creature that many believe could fit well into the MonsterVerse’s Hollow Earth, possibly as its original king.

It certainly seems feasible that a hibernating Titan – whether it be King Caesar or someone else entirely – could have been stirred into action by Godzilla’s atomic breath. It shouldn’t be overlooked that Godzilla produced a blast of atomic energy powerful enough to penetrate over a thousand kilometers into the Earth. It’s hard to imagine Godzilla drilling a tunnel of that size and it not having any noteworthy consequences for the MonsterVerse’s future. The Hellhawks that attacked the humans likely weren’t the only creatures disturbed by the destruction Godzilla caused. There’s no telling what other Hollow Earth denizens were directly affected by what Godzilla did. Several unseen Titans may come out of hibernation in the aftermath of the movie.

If the MonsterVerse makes Kong 2, it can use Godzilla’s atomic breath blast in Godzilla vs. Kong to explain what comes next for the Hollow Earth’s newest alpha. King Caesar, a different Toho kaiju, or a brand-new Titan can keep Kong busy in the MonsterVerse. If so, Kong could quickly find himself faced with opponents looking to steal his title as alpha of the Hollow Earth.
