Reports about Godzilla vs Kong 2 being in development raise speculation about what the story could entail. The news about a new installment in the franchise stems came from a government agency in Australia, which said that a Godzilla vs. Kong sequel will begin filming later this year. If that’s true, Godzilla or Kong (or both) could return to the big screen as early as 2023.

Since Godzilla vs. Kong was released, there have been reasons to suspect that Legendary’s MonsterVerse may have ended with the film. While it’s true that the movie amounted to a pleasant surprise at the box office in the midst of a worldwide pandemic, the lack of announcements created a great deal of uncertainty about the franchise’s future. Since Godzilla: King of the Monsters was a financial disappointment for the studio, there was a concern that Legendary and Warner Bros. may have opted against proceeding with any more installments. But now, the chances of the Titans appearing once in theaters are looking better and better.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In addition to a Skull Island anime on Netflix and a live-action MonsterVerse show on Apple TV+, Legendary appears to be working on a new movie in Godzilla and Kong’s cinematic universe. For now, it’s being described as a sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong, which implies both monsters will be returning. However, that hasn’t been confirmed, which means the movie could still turn out to be a solo film about one of the two Titans from the previous film. In regards to what the MonsterVerse sequel will be about, there are several possible storylines that the movie could explore. Here are some of the most likely options.

Humans Unleash A New Threat In Hollow Earth

Godzilla vs. Kong’s ending could be the catalyst for the events of the next movie. In the final scene, it was revealed that after discovering the Hollow Earth world, Monarch built a base down there. Other groups could also end up finding their own way to the Hollow Earth in the aftermath of the movie. Either way, humanity’s presence in the Hollow Earth creates a potential danger to Kong’s new home because there’s no telling what their activities might attract. Thousands of years ago, humans did live in the area, but they’ve all since died out. Humanity’s return to the area could wake up a dormant threat. If that happens, Kong may have to defend the Hollow Earth from a MonsterVerse incarnation of an established Toho villain, such as Gigan, Hedorah, or even Megalon. Depending on how dangerous this creature is, Godzilla may have to show up to help Kong clean up the humans’ mess.

Son of Kong

Months ago, there was a report that Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard was in talks to helm Son of Kong. Son of Kong was the title of a 1993 sequel to King Kong which told the story of the giant ape’s much smaller offspring. If it’s true that this is the direction the MonsterVerse is taking, it has interesting implications for the franchise’s future and how the movie would work. Of course, Kong having a son in the MonsterVerse would mean that he must have found at least one more surviving member of his species during his exploration of the Hollow Earth world. Since his son would have to be of a young age when the movie takes place, Son of Kong would most likely avoid the Titans and make use of much smaller monsters for the young Kong to fight and interact with.

Godzilla vs. Destoroyah

Godzilla’s next adventure could draw upon setup from King of the Monsters. During his second fight with Ghidorah, the military employed the Oxygen Destroyer, which badly wounded Godzilla and killed all the ocean life in the surrounding area. In Toho’s Godzilla vs. Destoroyah movie, it was explained that the use of the Oxygen Destroyer – the weapon known for killing the 1954 Godzilla – secretly gave birth to a powerful monster called Destoroyah. Though Godzilla did manage to defeat Destoroyah, their brutal battle culminated in him having to sacrifice himself to save his son. His death ended the Heisei era of Godzilla movies. The impact and overall importance of the Destoroyah character have led to theories that he’ll be the final villain for the MonsterVerse’s Godzilla. Whether that’ll be the case or not, King of the Monsters made it possible for Destoroyah to emerge at any point now.

Kong Is Challenged By Hollow Earth’s True King

Kong sitting on the throne in the Hollow Earth temple was taken as a symbolic moment filled with meaning for the monster and his future. In a sense, it was a sign that he had finally acquired his classic “King Kong” name. When Godzilla vs Kong ended, there was a feeling that the MonsterVerse essentially has two alphas now. Godzilla rules the surface, whereas Kong now has dominion over the Hollow Earth. The problem, though, is that he hasn’t properly earned this role yet. After all, the Hollow Earth may already have an alpha. If so, Kong may have to beat him before he can truly become the MonsterVerse’s King Kong. As for who this Hollow Earth challenger could be, many are theorizing that King Caesar – who was worshipped as a god in Toho’s movies – could be the one who makes a stand against him.

Destroy All Monsters

All the talk of an ancient Titan War in Godzilla vs. Kong has generated interest in seeing a modern-day version break out in a future movie. The new Titan War could be the MonsterVerse’s take on Toho’s epic Destroy All Monsters crossover, which saw monsters from multiple Toho franchises come together to beat King Ghidorah. But since the MonsterVerse’s Ghidorah is dead, the main villain could be a different villain from Toho’s library, with some candidates including Biollante, Gigan, and SpaceGodzilla. This creature could be an evil Titan alpha who has amassed an army of destructive monsters. Beating them may force Godzilla and Kong to team up. As a result, Godzilla and Kong may have to join forces with Rodan and several other MonsterVerse Titans to win. Additional Toho kaiju, such as Anguirus and Gorosaurus, could join the fray on Godzilla and Kong’s side.

Godzilla & Kong Have A Rematch

If the MonsterVerse really is making Godzilla vs. Kong 2, the movie could actually be a rematch between the two alpha Titans (as opposed to a proper team-up). Since this is a fight that’s already been done, the concept of the two battling it out a second time may lack excitement, but the ending of the last movie made it possible for their rematch to be inherently different from what came before. If Kong proves his alpha status to the Hollow Earth Titans, he could have minions of his own that could help him oppose Godzilla in a large-scale monster battle. If this were to occur, the MonsterVerse could still have a Titan War, albeit with Godzilla and Kong as enemies once more. Godzilla could call out Rodan and King of the Monsters’ original Titans out of hibernation to battle Kong and his newfound allies.
