Godzilla vs. Kong teases Mothra’s MonsterVerse future through a quick Easter egg. The fourth entry in Warner Bros. and Legendary’s monster-filled franchise holds the long-awaited clash between Gojira and King Kong. Building off the events of Kong: Skull Island and two Godzilla films, Godzilla vs. Kong references characters and events from the MonsterVerse’s past throughout. Although the movie sparingly includes other monsters and Titans, there are connections to other creatures like Ghidorah and Mothra.

Introduced in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Mothra played a pivotal role in the film’s nearly planet-destroying events. The giant bug-like creature was part of the MonsterVerse world for thousands of years, but Monarch only emerged from her egg in 2019 and begins her full metamorphosis. Mothra sides with Godzilla in the fight against Ghidorah and Rodan, and she ultimately sacrifices her life to give Godzilla more power so he can defeat Ghidorah. Despite the creature’s fiery and untimely death, Godzilla: King of the Monsters planets a few seeds suggesting that Mothra could return – and now Godzilla vs. Kong has doubled down on that possibility.

One of the new characters introduced in Godzilla vs. Kong is Bernie Hayes, a conspiracy theorist with a podcast who is working undercover for Apex. Hayes is obsessed with the Titans and Godzilla’s recent return. It is quite clear that he stays up to date on just about every piece of news or speculation related to these monsters and has more than 200 episodes of his podcast dedicated to exploring this subject matter. Right before Godzilla’s return, Bernie’s most recent episode is titled “Mothra Pregnancy Theory.” Although Godzilla vs. Kong doesn’t play any audio from the podcast to provide information on the theory, the Easter egg is the latest example of the MonsterVerse teasing Mothra’s future.

Mothra is one of the rare Titans who is quite capable of cheating death. One of Mothra’s abilities is rebirth. This is possible by Mothra laying an egg once she reaches the final stage of her metamorphosis. The new egg holds all of the memories of Mothra’s past lives up until their moments of death. This is how Mothra has been around for tens of thousands of years in the MonsterVerse and can return in future MonsterVerse stories. It would appear that Bernie’s podcast episode is built upon the tease in Godzilla: King of the Monsters‘ credits with the pregnancy referring to Mothra’s latest reincarnation.

Even though Godzilla vs. Kong teases Mothra’s return to the MonsterVerse, there are no signs that the egg hatches during the film’s events. As for what role she can play in the franchise’s future, past Toho movies could be used for inspiration. Mothra has fought Godzilla on multiple occasions and even given birth to Mothra Leo, a male version of the monster. Mothra Leo at one point gained the ability to travel backward through time, so that could be in Mothra’s future if the MonsterVerse ever needs to really reinvent itself after Godzilla vs. Kong.
