In its original context, this scene occurs as Dorothy is trying to persuade Rose not to be so down on herself now that she’s gotten older and has had trouble trying to find a job. In the process, she takes a few potshots at Blanche by pointing out how much her body has changed as she’s gotten older.

When Rose starts seeing someone romantically, she does so without telling her friends much about him. Given that the show was made in the 1980s—when weight loss was all the rage—it’s not surprising that the girls decide to go on a weight-loss regimen, including going to a an aerobics studio. After getting shamed from the woman in charge, they decide to buy some very expensive workout clothes.

Who hasn’t done the same thing, really? We all know how it feels to try to get motivated to work out by buying new clothes. Unfortunately, buying new clothes isn’t really a substitute for actually doing the hard work of exercise.

7 Blanche Vs. J. Lo

This meme became very popular right after J. Lo’s mind-blowingly good performance at the Super Bowl. It juxtaposes images of Blanche and J. Lo, pointing out how much being fifty has changed in the thirty years that have elapsed since The Golden Girls was on the air.

It’s easy to forget that, in many ways, The Golden Girls made it cool and sexy to be an older woman. It might not be going too far to suggest that this 1980s sitcom paved the way for later generations of middle-aged women to fully embrace their sexuality and their bodies. And yes, that includes J. There’s no question that Blanche has no shortage of self-confidence. She knows what she likes, she knows that she’s attractive enough to get it, and she’s willing to do whatever she can to do it. In this case, she’s determined to continue keeping that stiff upper lip, even though she’s been stricken with the flu.

What makes Blanche such a great character is that she becomes the kind of person that we can all identify with. No matter how bad we may be feeling—either physically or mentally—we should all have the sheer self-confidence of a Blanche.

4 Quiet, You Trash

When the girls are mistaken for being prostitutes and rounded up by the vice squad, Blanche finds it a bit difficult to handle, as this remark, biting and dismissive as it is, amply demonstrates. Needless to say, things go from bad to worse once they all end up in a jail cell with their fellow prostitutes.

What makes this meme so much fun is it allows for a similar dismissal of those who are silly enough not to like The Golden Girls. And, really, can you blame us for not wanting to associate with someone with such obviously bad taste?

3 Me On My Way To Overreact

When it comes to overreacting, no character does it with as much flare and flash as Blanche Devereaux. In this scene, she’s been awakened in the middle of the night and, announcing that she’s jumpy as a virgin at a prison rodeo, she sashays down the hallway, much to Dorothy’s amusement.

2 Me In January Vs. Me In February

In this episode, Blanche decides that she’s going to pursue a relationship with a much younger man and, as a result, she also puts her body through an extensive regimen in order to make herself young and appealing. Ultimately, it rather backfires when she realizes that the younger man sees her as a mother figure.

Still, we’ve all been there. We start our the New Year with a lot of enthusiasm for creating our new selves, only to fall off the wagon (and onto the couch) about halfway through the month of February.

1 Jewels & Cocaine

There are few things more frightening than being robbed while you’re away from home. That sense of violation is hard to shake off. The Golden Girls explored this fraught subject, when the girls come back from a concert to find that their house has been burgled. Blanche thinks that they’ve stolen her jewels, which she’s put in the flour. Dorothy takes the chance to lighten the moment with some light-hearted mockery.

It turns out, though, that Blanche actually put the jewels in the freezer, not the flour, and so all is well.
