Golden Girls: 10 Plot Problems That Make No Sense About Blanche

Blanche Devereaux is the most stunning creature that God ever created. A southern belle by day and an insatiable seductress by night, Blanche is everything a hot blooded man has ever dreamed of in a woman—according to Blanche, anyway. Known to the entire Miami community for her expertise and prowess in the bedroom, Blanche is certainly one of the more interesting golden girls.

Blanche’s childhood in Atlanta was also one full of adventure, romance, sensuality, and family drama. Although she has admitted to exaggerating her stories, there are still a few inconsistencies in Blanche’s stories about both her past and her present.

10 Rebecca

When Rebecca is introduced to audiences, it is after she returns from Paris, unsuccessful at pursuing a career in modeling. Rebecca has lost her self-esteem. Consequently, she is dating an emotionally abusive man, and she feels she cannot do better. Blanche helps her daughter to see that she can do better.

The next time Rebecca is introduced, she has changed her physical appearance hugely, even though nobody comments on it. She also does not look like the first Rebecca at all, even having different hair and a different voice.

9 How Many Children Does Blanche Have?

Unlike the other golden girls, Blanche does not have a very good relationship with her children. She did not take care of them growing up, leaving them to the care of their nanny, which caused her adult children to neglect her in turn. Blanche does not seem to remember how many children she actually has, and what genders they are.

She has claimed she has six children, then four children (three boys and one girl) even though two different daughters have been to Miami to visit her. She also entirely stops mentioning her sons eventually, and they never come to visit her, except Matthew on The Golden Palace.

8 How Many Siblings Does She Have?

In earlier seasons, Blanche talks about having two sisters, Charmaine and Virginia. Both sisters also visit her in Miami, Virginia to ask for a kidney, and Charmaine to ask for an heirloom. But, Charmaine soon disappears after this episode, never to be heard of again.

When Blanche goes home for her dad’s funeral, Charmaine does not show up, and neither Blanche nor Virginia bring this up. Blanche also suddenly brings up her brother, Clayton, in season four, despite never mentioning him before that. In The Golden Palace, another brother, Tad, is introduced on the show.

7 How Long Have The Girls Lived With Her?

Suddenly finding they can no longer live together because they are getting on each other’s nerves, the girls visit a psychiatrist, where they confide that they have lived together for five years.

This is contradicted in the episode where Blanche wants to put up a hot tub. She is informed that she cannot have more than two tenants in her house, and one must leave. To prevent this, Blanche decides to sell parts of her house to the girls, so they become owners. The girls claim that this is the best solution since they have known each other for seven years.

6 Why Does Blanche Need To Rent Out The House?

Blanche is a character known for boasting about all the great things in her life. She boasts often about how she was smart enough to marry a wealthy man, unlike the other girls. She also says that George’s wealth is how they were able to afford her house in Miami.

When George appears in her dream, he references being a rich man, too, proving that Blanche did not make this up. So, why does she have to rent out her house to pay the mortgage after more than three decades of living in the house? She also has to work part-time to pay her share of the mortgage, so what happened to her pension?

5 What Happened After She Found Out She Is Jewish?

Blanche loves to talk about her Southern legacy and proudly talks about the civil war as though it is something to be proud of. In The Golden Palace, Blanche celebrates by putting up a confederate flag, until Roland challenges her about the pain the flag causes to so-called ‘Yankees.’

Blanche is proud of her Southern heritage and never questions it until her family tree reveals that one of her great-grandmothers was a Jewish Yankee, making her Jewish. Blanche is rejected from the Southern Confederate Club, because she is not a pure confederate. It seems she did not learn her lesson about discriminatory exclusion and decides to pretend she is not part-Jewish.

4 What Happened To Her Accent?

Audiences were introduced to a Blanche with an Oklahoman accent during the first two seasons of The Golden Girls. Her accent then suddenly changes into a Southern accent that sounds more and more Southern as the series progresses.

This change in accent is not acknowledged by the girls, even as her drawl becomes more and more pronounced. The only acknowledgment came from Sophia, who accused her of faking her accent to attract men, although it was just a one-off comment that didn’t result in any true acknowledgment.

3 Coco

The pilot episode of The Golden Girls introduces Coco, a gay man living with Blanche, Dorothy and Rose, presumably paying his share of the rent. Soon after, Sophia arrives at Blanche’s house after there is a fire at Shady Pines. By the end of the episode, it is decided that Sophia would move in.

The pilot episode is the only episode in which Coco appears. He presumably leaves or was kicked out to make room for Sophia. What happened to him is never discussed by the girls, and they never bring him up during their midnight cheesecake binges.

2 Why Did Blanche Almost Get Married?

A central theme of Blanche’s character is her fear of ever loving another man after dealing with the devastating death of her beloved husband, George. She runs through men like water but confides in the girls that she is scared to get close with another man the way she was with her husband.

This is not true, however, because she almost marries Harry in the pilot episode, until he is arrested for being a bigamist. She is very excited to marry him and shows no sign of her characteristic fear of commitment.

1 What Is Her Middle Name?

Lying is apparently a Southern tradition, according to Blanche Devereaux. She has lied about the color of her hair, her weight, her age, how many men she has slept with, the things she does in bed, how flexible she is, being a virgin, being dead, and so on. Blanche lies so much that she officially redacted her age on her birth certificate. Neither her friends nor her fans know what her middle name is. She has claimed that it is Marie, but she has also claimed that it is Elizabeth.
