When people think of HGTV’s Good Bones, they often think of mother-daughter duo Karen and Mina fixing up rundown houses and beautifying neighborhoods. But another important character on the show is Mina’s baby brother, Tad. What do we know about how the two are related?

Tad Starsiak is the project manager at Two Chicks and a Hammer, the company behind Mina and Karen’s impressive renovations. Tad has a bit of an interesting backstory when it comes to who he calls mom. His birth mother tragically died when he was a young child. Therefore, because Tad and Mina are brother and sister, he bonded with Karen, who is basically his godmother, and she took him under her wing. The two still have an incredible bond today. Of course, working together helps to nurture that connection. He speaks highly of Karen, saying things like, “When I was going through that rough time, every day I woke up and she was there for me. It’s great having her as a teacher and as another mom (via The Cinemaholic).” Tad and Mina are also very close and she claims Tad is her inspiration to work hard. Tad feels similarly and has stated that Mina makes him a better person.

Tad and Mina are biologically brother and sister, and they share the same father. As explained by Mina and Karen in an HGTV behind the scenes video, Karen married Casey and had three children: Mina, William, and CR. Then, the two split up and Casey married Cheryl, resulting in Mina’s half-brother Tad, From there the family tree only gets more complicated. Check out Mina and Karen’s explanation below if you want to know the full story:

Between all the marriages, there are six children who are related in one way or another, whether it be through marriage or blood. Things get pretty complex after the first few marriages, not that there’s anything wrong with that! The more family, the better, right?

So, yes, Mina and Tad are biological siblings (technically half-siblings), and they do share a father. Of course, the amount of DNA that they share doesn’t seem to matter one way or the other. The two have an incredible bond no matter what and are a joy to watch on Good Bones!
