What if a witch was living in a picturesque small town, but no one had a clue? And what if she ran a beautiful antiques shop and gave people the best advice they could ever get? Hallmark’s Good Witch stars Catherine Bell as Cassie Nightingale, a benevolent witch who moves to Middleton and starts running the historical Grey House as an inn. Of course, she’s also got her store on the main street, and helping everyone around her find happiness keeps her very busy.

The TV drama has all the great parts of a Hallmark film, from a sweet small town to characters falling deeply in love, and with six seasons so far, there are tons of episodes for fans to catch up on. Upon viewings (and re-viewings), they’ll notice some characters are definitely smarter than others.

10 Ben Patterson

Ben and Stephanie are pretty serious about each other for a while, but they can’t seem to figure out a way to stay together, and their breakup doesn’t make a lot of sense. Afterward, it seems like they still have feelings for each other, and Stephanie never really gives a reason for why they had to split up in the first place.

Ben doesn’t seem all that intelligent as he’s a pretty bland presence on the show. As a much more charming character, Stephanie can definitely do a lot better.

9 Adam Hawkins

Adam and Stephanie fall in love in the fifth season. He’s a nice guy, but he’s not as interesting as some of the other love interests on the show.

Adam didn’t socialize much before meeting Stephanie and becoming friendly with her, so people in Middleton don’t know a lot about him. He doesn’t seem particularly dumb or super smart, but somewhere in the middle. If it weren’t for the other charming townsfolk, Adam might be rated a bit higher.

8 George O’Hanrahan

George is Cassie’s late husband Jake’s father-in-law, and he has a big presence on the show as he lives in Grey House.

He is sweet and old-fashioned. While he has moments of clarity where he gives great advice, there are other times when he isn’t quite sure how to connect with Cassie or his family.

7 Stephanie Borden

Cassie is best friends with Stephanie, who runs the Bistro Café.

Stephanie is adorable and kind and perfectly suited to running a business where she interacts with the public, as she’s incredibly friendly. But while she has her moments of wisdom, she’s a little on the ditzy side.

6 Nick Radford

Nick is Sam’s son, and while he’s probably a pretty smart kid, he spends a lot of time moping around and whining about his parents’ split and having to move to Middleton with his dad.

Nick loses some points in the intelligence category since he complains so much, and he’s not perceptive enough to realize that his parents really shouldn’t be together. The move also ends up being really good for him.

5 Abigail Pershing

Cassie’s cousin Abigail is the kind of witch who shows up in horror flicks.

Unlike Cassie, Abigail is not necessarily a good witch because she uses her powers for her own selfish ends. She wants to make sure that she always succeeds, even if it means hurting someone else or stealing something from them. Abigail may not be the nicest person around, but she’s very smart because she can manipulate others and get what she wants.

4 Martha Tinsdale

Small towns are often the environment that thrillers take place in, and most Hallmark movies are set in small towns as well.

Martha is the mayor of Middleton, and she’s the most hilarious character on the show. She’s also a classic Hallmark Channel type who could show up in any movie as she has very strong opinions and isn’t afraid to share them. Martha might seem a little flighty at times, but she’s very smart and has a deep understanding of the town’s history.

3 Sam Radford

Sam is the town doctor whom everyone loves because he’s so handsome and full of charm. He’s not the greatest dad on television as his relationship with his son leaves a lot to be desired, but he does try.

Sam is one of the smartest people in Middleton as becoming a doctor means many degrees and years of hard work and experience. He’s got some emotional intelligence, too, as he’s more perceptive than most people might think.

2 Grace Russell

Cassie’s daughter Grace is played by Bailee Madison, who appeared as Callie’s half-sister on The Fosters. While Grace is a bit more naïve than her mom since she’s so much younger, she does have Cassie’s ability to see what will make people truly happy, and she makes a lot of decisions based on her gut.

It’s clear that Grace will grow up to have powers like her mom — if she doesn’t have them already, — and she’s also a great student who excels in all of her classes.

1 Cassie Nightingale

While there are many witches in horror films that are terrifying, Cassie couldn’t be sweeter. She has a knack for finding the perfect gift for people or figuring out the best piece of advice to give them so they can live their lives better and without any fear.

Cassie is also the smartest person on Good Witch, hands down. She has both emotional and academic intelligence, as she reads a lot and retains everything that she has studied. She sees things that other people can’t, and she’s a beloved and important part of Middleton.
