A film based on the virtual band Gorillaz is being developed by Netflix. Gorillaz is a band created by singer-songwriter Damon Albarn, the frontman for the band Blur, and artist Jamie Hewlett, the co-creator of the Tank Girl comics. Albarn is the only permanent member of the band, which is comprised of four animated members, featuring Noodle (guitar, vocals, keyboard), 2D (vocals, keyboard), Murdoc Niccals (bass), and Russel Hobbs (drums). The band lives in a fictional animated universe, created by Hewlett, that has been featured in their music videos, animated shorts, and even interviews.

In an interview with Apple Music (via Collider), Albarn said, “we’re making a full-length Gorillaz film with Netflix.” Albarn also said that writing sessions for the film are taking place. However, the project has not formally been announced by Netflix. Check out Albarn’s comments below:

“I’m at Netflix because we’re making a full-length Gorillaz film with Netflix. We’re having a writing session in Malibu this afternoon. It’s really exciting to do that. It’s something we’ve been wanting to do for a very long time. It’s been through so many incarnations…this Gorillaz doing a movie. Honestly.”

Albarn previously stated that the Gorillaz film would be somewhat abstract, though no plot details have been revealed. Given that the film will follow the characters from the band, their music is likely to play a big role in the film. It’s possible that Gorillaz fans may be in store for a more psychological music film akin to 1982’s Pink Floyd: The Wall, though that was based on a preexisting album where the Gorillaz movie has not yet announced the music it will feature. The Gorillaz movie is also likely to adhere to Hewlitt’s animation style to keep with the established look and feel of the world in which the band exists. There currently isn’t a release date for the Gorillaz film, but it could easily follow when Netflix offers an official announcement for the project.
