HBO Max’s Gossip Girl reboot is currently on a break, but it will feature more cameos from original cast members when it returns. Based on Cecily von Ziegesar’s bestselling young adult novels, the original teen series aired on CW for six seasons from 2007 to 2012. The show followed a group of wealthy high school students in New York’s Upper East Side and an anonymous blogger who followed their salacious scandals. The show was famous for its glossy wardrobe, steamy romances, and memorable characters. The original cast included Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Chace Crawford, Ed Westwick, and Penn Badgeley.

The revival series is set nine years after Gossip Girl has shut down its blog, with a new set of students and their accompanying drama. This time, however, social media changes the landscape of Manhattan’s clique. The new cast members include Jordan Alexander, Whitney Peak, Eli Brown, Tavi Gevinson, Thomas Doherty, Emily Alyn Lind, Evan Mock, Zion Moreno, and Savanna Lee Smith. Kristen Bell reprises her role from the original series as the show’s narrator. HBO Max’s Gossip Girl premiered on July 8 and has aired its first six episodes. The second half of Gossip Girl season 1 will start streaming in November.

Gossip Girl’s mid-season break seems a long wait, but showrunner Joshua Safran promises that it will be worth it. Speaking with The Wrap, Safran revealed that original cast members are set to make cameos on the last six episodes. However, Safran was quick to mention that none of the lead characters such as Serena (Lively) and Blair (Meester) will make an appearance. Still, he promised fans a lot of exciting references and “fun stuff.”

None of the core five or six kids are in the back half. But there are cameos from original cast members and there are references. Even just as simple as Episode 7 is a Thanksgiving episode. And you know, Thanksgiving on Gossip Girl, it’s a traditional event on our show and a traditional event in the world. And then, yeah, there are cameos and callbacks and some fun stuff.

The first six episodes of the new revival already featured a few allusions to Gossip Girl‘s past. Queen B and her famous “frenemy” Serena were directly mentioned, as well as Dan Humphrey, who was revealed to be the writer behind the eponymous website. In addition, actress Yin Chang, who played Nelly Yuki on the original series, guest starred on one episode.

While its predecessor was a major pop culture phenomenon, the Gossip Girl reboot debuted to mixed-to-negative reviews and failed to generate as much of a spark spark. It would have been more exciting if HBO got some of the original lead stars to make guest appearances, but Lively, Meester, and company seem to have moved on from their teen roles for good. Hopefully, bringing back other familiar faces will add some buzz to the remaining episodes and remind fans of the series’ glory days.
