Gossip Girl ended with a big twist as it was revealed that the person behind the title character was Dan Humphrey, and throughout the series, every post by Gossip Girl was narrated by Kristen Bell. With a reboot series soon to be released, fans of the original show were happy to hear Kristen Bell’s voice once again as Gossip Girl, but why is she narrating again after Dan’s reveal? The 2000s saw some interesting teen dramas, and one that continues to live in the hearts of fans all over the world is Gossip Girl. Based on the novel series of the same name by Cecily von Ziegesar, Gossip Girl premiered on The CW in 2007 and came to an end in 2012 after six seasons.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Gossip Girl followed the lives of privileged upper-class teenagers living in Manhattan’s Upper East Side and was narrated by the mysterious and omniscient blogger known as “Gossip Girl”, who documented the lives of wealthy teenagers in the area. Gossip Girl seemed to prefer to focus on the group of Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively), Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester), Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford), Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick), and Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley), sharing all the gossip they could get about them and their personal, social, and professional lives. Gossip Girl’s identity was the biggest mystery of the series, and while characters like Serena and Georgina Sparks (Michelle Trachtenberg) took over the blog at one point, fans didn’t know who was behind all those posts until the final episode of the series.

The finale of Gossip Girl dropped a major twist when it was revealed that Dan Humphrey was Gossip Girl, and he let the whole city know in the final chapter of his exposé. After that, the Gossip Girl website was shut down, but in the five-year time jump at the end of the episode, it was revealed a new person had taken over the blog and mantle of Gossip Girl, with viewers listening to Kristen Bell’s narration one final time. Now, almost a decade after the show came to an end, Warner Bros. is bringing a reboot series also titled Gossip Girl, set in the same timeline but eight years after the final scene of the original series, and following a new generation of teenagers. Although the original cast doesn’t have a role in the series, there’s one important actress who is coming back: Kristen Bell, who will voice Gossip Girl again even after Dan’s reveal.

Fans were delighted to learn Kristen Bell will be back as the voice of the seemingly unstoppable Gossip Girl, and while the controversial Dan twist at the end of the series might seem like an obstacle to her return, it actually plays well. As mentioned above, the final scenes in the series finale showed someone had revived the Gossip Girl identity and was ready to continue Dan’s legacy, so it was only fair to have the mysterious voice back as narrator in order to keep some consistency. The reboot will also see the new characters dealing with Gossip Girl’s posts and, well, gossip, and trying to uncover their identity, so what better to keep their name a secret than having the original voice back. As the new series will follow new characters, having Kristen Bell narrating the show again also serves as a link to the original show and its cast, expanding the legacy of Gossip Girl as a character.

It’s unknown if the Gossip Girl reboot will have cameo appearances from the original cast, but listening to Kristen Bell’s voice narrating the series again will help fans feel more connected and welcomed into this new story than if it had a completely new voice leading the way. Ultimately, Dan’s reveal in the Gossip Girl finale doesn’t have to affect who narrates the reboot series, but his work and legacy will surely be addressed in the new series.
