It was a long wait, but finally the new game from the developers behind Batman: Arkham series was revealed at DC Fandom last September, and it’s not quite a Batman game at all. Gotham Knights is actually a single-player and co-operative game starring the various members of the Batman family, with the core team being Nightwing, Robin, Red Hood, and Batgirl.

As of now, only these four playable characters have been revealed, but it’s entirely possible that more characters will be shown off throughout 2021. These characters could be unlockable as part of the game’s story, or available for purchase as DLC, but it’s likely there will be plenty to choose from.

10 Catwoman/Selina Kyle

When it comes to the Bat-family, only Robin is more closely identified as an ally of Batman than Catwoman. While she’s a villain as often as a hero, having a character that blurs the line between the two would be a lot of fun to play. Catwoman was a playable character in both Arkham City and Arkham Knight, where she’s been the only non-Batman character to be allowed to explore the open-world area. With her claws, whip, and caltrops, plus her more graceful fighting style, she’d be an interesting person to play as.

9 Batwing/Luke Fox

The one thing sorely missing from Gotham Knights right now is a person of color, so it’s a good thing that Lucius Fox’s son Luke, otherwise known as Batwing, would make such an entertaining playable character. The comic version of Luke is almost as much a technology genius as his father, with the addition of being a trained soldier, boxer, and eventually martial artist. The Batwing suit is more armored than other Bat-family outfits, has more gadgets including Spider-Man: Miles Morales-style invisibility, and most importantly, it can fly.

8 Batwoman/Kate Kane

Out of all the potential playable characters that could be coming to Gotham Knights, by far the most likely to appear is Batwoman/Kate Kane. She’s a major member of the Bat-family, enough so that Batman trusted her to lead a team that included Tim Drake’s Robin.

She’s another female character, which the game definitely needs, and a gay character too, which it needs even more. Plus of course, Batwoman’s popularity has never been higher as she’s currently got her own TV series on the CW, albeit no longer with Kate Kane.

7 Talon/William Cobb

While details on Gotham Knights are still thin on the ground, especially regarding the game’s villains, the one thing fans do know is that the story will include the sinister Court of Owls organization. While the Court will probably tie into at least one of the primary characters’ storylines, their inclusion does create the possibility of playing as one of their members – specifically lead Talon William Cobb, who received his own comic series in the New 52, and is actually the great-grandfather of Dick Grayson/Nightwing. After fighting the Talons for most of Gotham Knights, it would be good to play as one.

6 Green Arrow/Oliver Queen

It has long been suggested by fans that Green Arrow would make an excellent follow-up to the Batman Arkham series, since Oliver Queen is also a powerless superhero with fun gadgets. Even now that Arrow has been canceled, the character remains popular. There’s no reason why Green Arrow couldn’t head to Gotham City, following the death of Batman, in order to help bring the city back under control. Marvel’s Avengers managed to make the bow-and-arrow-based Kate Bishop fun to play, so Green Arrow could work just as well for Gotham Knights.

5 Azrael/Jean-Paul Valley

The angel of death of the Order of St. Dumas, Azrael is a key member of the Bat-family, even though he has a strained relationship with them at times. In the Batman Knightfall comics saga, Jean-Paul Valley was the one who became Batman after Bane broke Bruce Wayne’s back. In the Batman Arkham games, Azrael (the Michael Lane version) positions himself as Batman’s replacement, and the player takes control of Azrael as Batman tests him. With Batman dead in Gotham Knights, it would be likely that Azrael would return in some fashion to take up the mantle of the Bat.

4 Orphan/Cassandra Cain

Most recently seen in Birds of Prey played by Ella Jay Basco, Cassandra Cain in the comics is the daughter of assassins David Cain and Lady Shiva, and is one of the deadliest fighters in the world. After Barbara Gordon was incapacitated by the Joker, Cassandra took over as Batgirl until Barbara was ready to return to the role, and in DC Rebirth she took the handle of Orphan.

She is a quick fighter who even Batman struggles to defeat, with limited speech and social experience, which would make her a unique character to experience.

3 Huntress/Helena Bertinelli

Last seen in Birds of Prey and with several appearances on Arrow and Justice League: The Animated Series, Helena Bertinelli’s Huntress would make an interesting addition to Gotham Knights, as she primarily fights with a crossbow. She rarely has a good relationship with other Bat-family members as she’s usually prepared to kill, although she is on the same team as Barbara Gordon for Birds of Prey. She hates the criminal underworld she was born into and fights it violently. She’s also had many costume changes, which would be good for the game’s gear system.

2 Harley Quinn

Possibly the unlikeliest choice to be playable in Gotham Knights thanks to her leading appearance in Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League due next year, nevertheless if allowed in both, Harley Quinn would be a fantastic and unique addition to Gotham Knights. A more anarchic, villainous character would be a joy to play as opposed to the more uptight crimefighters, and taking out criminals with Harley’s baseball bat would never get old. Plus, it gives Gotham Knights the perfect excuse to use the Joker.

1 Batman/Bruce Wayne

In a list of characters fans most want to see playable in Gotham Knights, and also totally expect to see in the story, Batman comes out on top. The premise of Gotham Knights is that Batman is dead and the rest of the Bat-family has to take over, but this is a comic book game. Heroes don’t stay dead, especially not major ones like Batman. Fans have already started calling it that Bruce Wayne is still alive, despite developer denials, and if alive, it’s possible that Batman may be playable in the game, perhaps as a final unlock for completing the story or the last DLC release.
