A number of individuals have received Gotham Knights-related packages containing newspaper clippings, an invitation to a ball and a Court of Owls mask. The upcoming superhero title, developed by WB Games Montréal, sees Batman’s closest allies take up his mantle after the hero is suddenly killed. The developer has recently teased Gotham Knights’ appearance at DC FanDome 2021, with the digital event scheduled to air on October 16.

WB Games Montréal previously developed Batman: Arkham Origins, a prequel to Rocksteady Studios’ iconic Arkham trilogy, but Gotham Knights will be set in its own original universe. In this game’s world, Bruce Wayne is killed, leaving Gotham’s protection in the hands of Batman’s companions Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing and Red Hood. Gotham Knights will allow players to control any one of these four characters, with optional cooperative play allowing teams of two heroes to work together. The title is also said to feature a day-night cycle, multiple supervillains and extensive character customization. Gotham Knights will appear at DC FanDome 2021 after months of silence, alongside Rocksteady Studios’ own upcoming DC title Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Ahead of DC FanDome on October 16, Gotham Knights has sent packages to a number of individuals involved in social media and the gaming industry. These mysterious boxes contain a number of items, including invitations to a masquerade ball which serves as a memorial for Bruce Wayne. An issue of the fictional Gotham Gazelle newspaper is also included, which explains the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of the Caped Crusader. The package’s most unsettling inclusion, however, is the familiar mask worn by the villainous Court of Owls organization. Among the lucky party guests are Twitch associate bitter_hime and podcasting team TheNerdCouncil.

The Court of Owls, a mysterious group of masked criminal who run Gotham City from the shadows, was first introduced in the pages of DC Comics in 2011. The Court’s distinct appearance and unsettling nature allowed it to become a staple of Batman’s already large rogues gallery, and all signs point to the group being the main antagonists of Gotham Knights. The Court of Owls will appear alongside other supervillains, notably Mr. Freeze, but there hasn’t been any suggestion toward an appearance of iconic villain Joker in Gotham Knights. Considering Batman’s absence from the title, it is likely that more obscure and largely unexplored villains will be given the spotlight over the Dark Knight’s prominent nemesis.

Little has been seen of Gotham Knights since its reveal at 2020’s DC FanDome, so some viral marketing is a good way to lead toward the game’s appearance this year. The packages are a bit unsettling, which fits well with the elusive and creepy nature of the watchful Court of Owls. A masquerade ball is a perfect setting to encounter the masked organization, and all indications point towards Gotham Knights‘ luxurious event occurring during DC FanDome 2021.
