One thing there isn’t any lack of on the internet is rumors about the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI, which hasn’t even been officially announced by Rockstar yet. Fans are drooling for the next installment of the series, and as it has been over eight years since GTA V was first released, players will take any piece of news that they can get.

And though it’s only worth taking any piece of information at face value at this point, it’s fun to speculate where the sixth entry in the franchise could possibly be set. As Rockstar is the gold standard when it comes to open-world environments, there are so many possibilities that the developer could take on.

10 Lots Santos

Grand Theft Auto V wasn’t the only time Los Santos and the resemblance of California at large was depicted in the video game series, as the map was essentially an overhauled version of that of San Andreas.

As Rockstar is known to reuse locations, the developer could very well return back to that city. Even though some argue that the story of GTA V was a step backward, there’s no denying how incredible the map was. However, there are still ways in which it could improve, as there needs to be more buildings players can enter, and there was never a casino in the game, even though it was teased on several occasions.

9 Carcer City

Many fans of Grand Theft Auto may have never heard of Carcer City, but it’s another fictional city in a different Rockstar series. Carcer City is where Manhunt takes place, and though it’s a different series altogether, Carcer City does exist in the same universe as Liberty City and the other fictional GTA cities.

In GTA V, Michael mentions that his first job took place in Carcer City, so the idea that the sixth installment of the franchise could take place in the city is one of the most interesting fan theories about the upcoming game.

8 London

Given that Rockstar has always returned to previous cities, whether it’s 1980s Miami, the dirty Liberty City, or the sun-soaked Los Santos, there’s still one city that has been left untouched all these years. As the second GTA game was based in London, the series hasn’t returned to it since.

There are rumors that GTA VI will return to London, though it seems unlikely. Not only would it be hard to pull off a GTA game in London considering its tight gun laws, but most of the streets are tight and compact too, meaning it wouldn’t make for the best gameplay experience.

7 Rio De Janeiro

There has been a rampant fan rumor for a while now that goes by the name of Project Americas, which explains that the sixth game will take place in five different locations, and one of those is a fictional city based on Rio De Janeiro.

If this is true, it would be the first time a GTA game has been based outside of the US ever since Grand Theft Auto: London, a top-down 2D game from 1998. And with the video game series Just Cause, which is based in South America, being influenced by the GTA series, it’d see Rockstar looking to its peers for influences for the first time ever.

6 Liberty City

Though it has been done to death, it actually wouldn’t be surprising if GTA VI does return to Liberty City. If the game is set in Liberty City, it would mark the fourth time for the franchise, after GTA III, GTA: Liberty City Stories, and GTA IV, and that’s not even including all of the DLC for GTA IV.

However, GTA IV is seen by some as the best Grand Theft Auto game for many reasons, and one of those is because of how interactive the city is, as well as how magnificent it looks and how sprawling it is.

5 Vice City

There’s a new rumor about GTA VI every day, whether it’s about the release date, the characters, or the location. But one rumor that has remained consistent for years is the idea that the still unannounced game could be set in Vice City.

As different eras are something fans want to see in the upcoming GTA VI, it’d be great to return to the Miami-influenced city in a different time period to the neon-soaked ’80s that Vice City was based in.

4 Bullworth

Bully was a sleeper hit for Rockstar, but ever since its release, even with it being three console generations old at this point, it still has a huge following. The game took place in a spooky fictional town called Bullworth, and it was one of the most layered open worlds Rockstar has ever built, despite not being the biggest.

Rockstar has been speaking about a sequel for years, as there were rumors that it was actually in production, and the composer of the first game claimed he made the score for the sequel for Rockstar. So if there are remnants of a canceled Bully sequel, the town of Bullworth could be implemented into GTA somehow.

3 Tokyo

The setting of Tokyo might sound a little out of left field, as it isn’t the first place that springs to mind when it comes to crime or American satire, obviously. However, Rockstar had reportedly been considering Tokyo for a setting all the way back to 2003, and Grand Theft Auto: Tokyo was even trademarked.

Though it’s unlikely, it’d be incredible to see the next game take place in Japan, even if players wouldn’t get to use all the US-centric vehicles the series has become known for.

2 Las Vegas

In the same article about Tokyo, as well as trademarking that city, Rockstar apparently trademarked Grand Theft Auto: Sin City, and though Sin City might not mean Las Vegas, it’s unlikely it was referring to anywhere else.

Though Las Venturas is a very condensed fictional version of Vegas, which can be found in San Andreas, a giant city in GTA that was modeled after Vegas would give the neon-drenched Vice City a run for its money. And it’d at least balance out the fact that there were no casinos in GTA V too.

1 Chicago

As great as it’d be to see the Grand Theft Auto series go overseas, it remains highly unlikely due to the fact that the series is so tied to the American dream, and the franchise is essentially a massive satire of exactly that.

But instead of revisiting the same cities fans have seen in multiple games in the series, such as Vice City, Liberty City, and Los Santos, there should be a fictional version of a different major US city. Chicago would be the likeliest candidate of all of them, as it’s a huge metropolis that has a high crime rate, but also a community of extreme wealth, which are the two things Rockstar have had their feet in ever since the early 2000s.
