Grandmaster Survived Infinity War’s Ending, According to Jeff Goldblum

Jeff Goldblum says his character, the Grandmaster, is alive and well in the MCU after Avengers: Infinity War, at least according to the actor. As a great deal of the population now knows, based on Avengers: Infinity War‘s ticket sales, the tent pole movie ended with the villain Thanos snapping his fingers and half of the universe’s population being wiped out. Infinity War saw the “deaths” of Black Panther, Spider-Man, Gamora and many more.

However Thor: Ragnarok‘s Grandmaster wasn’t among the confirmed dead. Goldblum’s character, the charming and slightly unstable leader of the planet Sakaar, was the latest addition in the MCU’s growing slate of the Elders of the Universe. It’s a group that also includes Benicio del Toro’s the Collector, who appeared and was maybe killed in Avengers: Infinity War. However Goldblum has implied that not only is the Grandmaster alive, he’s pretty much invincible.

In an interview with Digital Spy, promoting his role in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Goldblum was asked about the Grandmaster and his fate post-Infinity War. The actor responded in his typical quirky and very Goldblum-ish way. He explained:

Grandmaster is more superheroed than all of them put together. You can’t kill me, I’m like a vampire. I’m deathless and I can kill people by looking at them. Or I can resurrect them just by looking at them and thinking of them. I can do everything. Being able to do all of that, all I want to do is play gamesSo really I’m everywhere and nowhere. I’m like Keyser Söze.

In addition, Goldblum teased, “I could be, potentially, very much around. Anything they want me to do I’d be ready and able.” It’s safe to say there’s probably a little bit of Goldblum’s verbose bragging in his answer about the Grandmaster’s fate. Goldblum is very famous for being just the slightest bit off kilter, but in a fun and winking type of way. Most of the Grandmaster’s best scenes in Thor: Ragnarok are just examples of him saying whatever weird thing came to mind. As such, Goldblum’s answer shouldn’t be viewed as an official one from Marvel.

Yet Goldblum isn’t lying about the Grandmaster’s power levels. While few examples of the Grandmaster’s powers exist in Thor: Ragnarok, he and his fellow Celestials are some of the MCU’s strongest characters. Thanos’ possession of the Infinity Gauntlet and all its gems launches the Mad Titan to the top of the power heap during Infinity War. However, it’s not that outlandish to assume that for, whatever reason, the Grandmaster survived Thanos’ snap.

At the very least, it sounds like Goldblum could pop up in another MCU movie down the line. Even if the Grandmaster was taken out at the end of Infinity War, the deaths from the Gauntlet probably aren’t going to stick. If Goldblum wants to come back to the MCU, The Grandmaster will have survived Thanos’ attack or just return with Peter Parker, T’Challa and the rest in Avengers 4.

There’s no reason for the Grandmaster to not return either. Ragnarok really only scratched the surface of Goldblum’s character since the Grandmaster was a secondary antagonist. Even with limited screentime, The Grandmaster was one of the best elements of the very fun Thor: Ragnarok and he deserves to return. The more Goldblum and/or the Grandmaster, regardless of Avengers: Infinity War‘s game-changing ending, the better.
