Paramount+ announced story details and the cast list for the Grease prequel series, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies. Released in 1978, Paramount struck a high note with the adaptation of the Grease Broadway musical for the big screen. Starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, Grease – and the soundtrack album – became a smash global hit.

Touching on issues of peer pressure, high school cliques, and life in middle America, Grease has spanned generations. Grease 2, starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Maxwell Caulfield, was released in 1982, although the film was less acclaimed than its predecessor. In 2019, HBO Max announced that it had ordered a live-action musical spinoff of Grease, titled Grease: Rydell High. However, Paramount announced it would reclaim the Grease property, and workshopped Rydell High into a series centering on the titular Pink Ladies. Now, it appears the high school musical franchise is set to reach a new generation.

Paramount+ announced the full cast list for Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies as production has officially started on the musical series. Set in 1954, four years before the events of Grease, Rise of the Pink Ladies stars Marisa Davila as Jane, Cheyenne Isabel Wells as Olivia, Ari Notartomaso as Cynthia, Tricia Fukuhara as Nancy, Shanel Bailey as Hazel, Madison Thompson as Susan, Johnathan Nieves as Richie, Jason Schmidt as Buddy, Maxwell Whittington-Cooper as Wally and Jackie Hoffman as Assistant Principal McGee. Helmed by Annabel Oakes, the series will feature new original music. Slated for a 10-episode season, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies will debut exclusively on Paramount + later in 2022. Indeed, it appears the Grease prequel series intends to place a spotlight on the all-girl quartet that spiced up Rydell High as the hypnosis for Rise of the Pink Ladies reads, “Before rock ‘n’ roll ruled, before the T-Birds were the coolest in the school, four fed-up outcasts dare to have fun on their own terms, sparking a moral panic that will change Rydell High forever.”

Musical enthusiasts itching for a series that features regular doses of song and dance should delight in a series set in the same universe as one of the most popular musicals of all time. At this time, it remains to be seen if original Grease actors will make a special appearance in the prequel series. For now, Grease fans can look forward to a fresh cast, new musical numbers, and the origin story of the Pink Ladies in the upcoming Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies.
