The executive producer of Stargirl says that Green Lantern’s daughter Jade is the perfect foil for the title hero. Stargirl season 2 finds the title hero and her team, the Justice Society of America, facing off against a new host of threats including The Shade and Eclipso, as well as introducing a variety of new allies like Jakeem Thunder and Thunderbolt. However, the biggest reveal came in the first trailer which confirmed that Jade, daughter of Alan Scott, would appear in the show played by actress Ysa Penarejo.

Jade, whose real name is Jennifer Hayden, was introduced to DC Comics in All-Star Squadron #25 in September 1983 and was created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Jerry Ordway. The daughter of the original Golden Age Green Lantern Alan Scott, the character has had a long history in DC Comics. She has been a member of The Outsiders, The Justice Society of America, and the Justice League. Stargirl marks Jade’s first appearance in any medium outside the comics, and it appears there was a particular reason Johns brought her into Stargirl.

In an interview with EW, Geoff Johns says that Jade is the perfect foil for Stargirl as he revealed that Courtney struggles with her own insecurities about being Stargirl. Jade, being the daughter of a member of the JSA, is everything Courtney thought she was in season 1. The plan to bring Jade into the series has been in place since season 1. Read what Johns said below:

“Since the beginning, I wanted to bring in Jennie-Lynn Hayden, who’s one of my favorite characters from the comic books. She is the perfect foil for Courtney because she is literally everything Courtney thought she was in season 1 — she is the daughter of a huge superhero and she has this great power. Courtney sees Jennie as kind of the perfect hero, what Courtney thought she was, and it makes Courtney, as she says, feel less than and she can’t help it, it just happens. And it reveals that Courtney still struggles with her identity and her own self-confidence and self-image, despite having a hugely successful beginning of a career as Stargirl. She still struggles with the fact that her life isn’t important, and the rejection of her father from last season we’ll see still affects her in this season.”

Stargirl was laying the groundwork for Jade to appear in the series back in season 1, which featured the lantern in multiple episodes. Jade fits in very well with the established JSA members on the series, a younger hero who must take on the legacy of the original but now with the added weight of actually being the daughter of one, as opposed to a successor who didn’t know their original counterpart like Stargirl herself is. Due to Alan Scott appearing in the upcoming HBO Max Green Lantern series, it is unlikely Stargirl will feature an appearance by Scott, but the show could explore Jade’s relationship with her twin brother: the superhero, Obsidian.

Stargirl season 1 saw Courtney coming into her own as Stargirl, believing she was destined to become a superhero and believing her father was the original Starman despite what her stepfather, Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson) told her. Stargirl eventually finds out her father isn’t Starman, and is just an average guy who didn’t heroically die, but instead just never came back for her. While her arc in season 1 was about letting go of the narrow-minded view of what she saw as her family to embrace her step-dad Pat, as well as her friends as a new surrogate family, it appears season 2 will push Stargirl forward on what exactly she wants out of her future. Stargirl season 2 is set to be a darker one with the inclusion of villains whose powers literally involve the darkness, so Jade’s appearance will add a little light to dispel the darkness.
