In season nine of the hit primetime medical drama on ABC, Grey’s Anatomy, the doctors are still dealing with the plane crash at the end of season eight that killed Meredith’s half-sister, Lexie.

The doctors involved in the crash sustain both significant physical and emotional injuries and it takes a lot of time and healing for them all to return to work and some sense of normalcy. There’s also a lawsuit pending after the crash and the outcome could greatly affect the operations of the entire hospital.

10 The Face Of Change (8.3)

This is the episode where we start to see the chemistry between Alex and Jo. The two lovebirds repeatedly state to their friends and fellow doctors that they are indeed, just friends, but no one is buying it.

Jo and Alex spend a lot of time together and they don’t just talk, they flirt, and laugh, and seem very attracted to one another. Jo pulls Alex into a supply closet where she’s hiding doughnuts she stole from the nurse’s station and in that moment, Alex realizes he does have feelings for Jo.

9 Readiness Is All (8.4)

A storm is approaching Seattle and the doctors have three days to prepare the hospital for any and all worst case scenarios. Alex brings a badly injured man into the hospital, asking Derek to save him. The man is Jason Myers, a fellow doctor who’s been dating Jo.

Derek works on Jason, while everyone assumes Alex was the one who injured the man because he saw Jo and Jason fighting the evening before and Jo came to Alex crying and bruised up. It’s later revealed that Jo is in the one who put Jason in the hospital.

8 I Was Made For Lovin’ You (8.4)

It’s Arizona’s first day back to work after the plane crash and everyone is ready to greet her, even though they all know they shouldn’t make a big deal of her first day because that’s not what Arizona wants.

At the same time, April and Jackson have their own stress when April tells Jackson she’s late and she’s never late. April thinks God is punishing her for having premarital sex and is relieved when the test comes back negative, which hurts Jackson’s feelings.

7 Run, Baby, Run (8.5)

In the midseason finale for season nine, Ben and Bailey’s wedding day is quickly approaching. In an effort to stay apart, Jackson and April pick dates for each other for the big day.

Meanwhile, Callie is trying to convince Derek to have a risky surgery to fix his hand, but Derek is scared to do it and won’t agree, even when Meredith asks him to and calls his sister, Lizzie, played by Neve Campbell, to Seattle for reinforcements.

6 Things We Said Today (8.5)

It is Miranda Bailey’s wedding day, but she must put her excitement on hold because Richard Webber’s wife, Adele is admitted into the hospital with the biggest aortic aneurysm Bailey has ever seen and she has to operate on it.

Adele’s operation is successful and Bailey makes it to her wedding, but at the reception, Richard shows up. Meredith is surprised to see him there until he informs her that Adele has passed.

5 This Is Why We Fight (8.5)

After the plane crash, the doctors sue the hospital due to the fact that just a few months before the crash, the hospital and Owen had signed off on using a new charter company for their planes and the company they chose was cheaper with a poor safety rating, putting the doctors at risk and making a catastrophic crash more likely.

The hospital is about to go bankrupt from the lawsuit because their insurance found a loophole that made them not responsible. Luckily, Catherine Avery steps in at the last second and makes a bid on the hospital, courtesy of the Harper Avery Foundation.

4 Beautiful Doom (8.6)

This episode focuses on Meredith and Cristina and their relationship after the plane crash. Meredith is back at Seattle Grace Mercy West, while Cristina has transferred to a hospital in Minnesota as a way to recover and move on from the trauma she acquired in the crash.

This episode shows Cristina and Meredith communicating long distance and finding ways to support each other no matter what. It also gives viewers a lot of information on what Cristina’s life is like now that she’s no longer in Seattle with her people.

3 Going, Going, Gone (8.8)

In the premiere episode of season nine, the doctors are still reeling from their plane crash. It’s been a few months, but the trauma is still very present.

A new group of interns start at Seattle Grace Mercy West and they’ve all heard about the crash and know their new bosses have a lot to deal with. In this particular episode, the last victim of the plane crash dies, Mark Sloan. For a moment, it looks like Mark has recovered, but that’s not the case.

2 Remember The Time (8.9)

In the second episode of the ninth season, we see how the doctors were rescued and the measures taken at the local hospital they were brought to, that saved all of them. Cristina is comatose in the hospital and nothing seems to be working to bring her out of it.

The group must all travel back to Seattle by plane, despite Meredith’s efforts to get them another mode of transportation, it’s not possible due to Mark and Arizona’s injuries.

1 Perfect Storm (8.9)

In the second part of the season nine finale, everything that can go wrong, does go wrong. A storm hits Seattle, sending the hospital into absolute chaos. The electricity goes out and the back up generator won’t start, leaving the hospital in the dark.

Right before the storm hits, Meredith goes into labor and her doctor tells her she needs a c-section, which Miranda Bailey performs in the dark and pulls it off, delivering a healthy baby boy, which Meredith and Derek decide to name after her, calling him Bailey.
