The seventeenth season finale of the long-running Grey’s Anatomy left fans with a few happy endings while laying the groundwork for some more relationship drama in the upcoming season. In the finale, minutes after Maggie and Winston tied the knot, Link’s enthusiastic proposal to Amelia met a lukewarm response.

Link and Amelia made a somewhat surprise couple, albeit in a good way. And their relationship seemed to move ahead like a dream as both of them, especially Amelia, seemed to have found some stability in their lives for the first time. Yet, Grey’s happiness is usually marred with a dark turn of events, and things went awry for them soon enough. Fans would be waiting to find out their fate in the eighteenth season. Now, the question is, do they or do they not really make sense together?

10 Make Sense: Both Have Been Through A Lot In Life

Both Amelia and Link have been through difficult times in their respective pasts. Amelia, as fans of the Grey’s spin-off Private Practice would know, had lost her fianceé and then the latter’s posthumous child. The two incidents, especially the death of her baby left her devastated, and she also struggled with addiction problems until very recently.

Link, too, had had his own share of trauma. He was diagnosed with bone cancer as a young boy and although he ended up beating it, he was still miserable at his parents’ divorce. Seeing how both of them have been through so much, it makes sense that they would be able to support each other and understand where each of them comes from emotionally.

9 Don’t: They Are Polar Opposites

In terms of their natures, though, Amelia couldn’t be farther from Link. Although she no longer appears excessively volatile, and nor does she appear to unravel all the time as she did before her brain tumor was diagnosed and removed, she is still prone to anxiousness.

Link, on the other hand, seems to be just the opposite. He is of a more relaxed temperament and loves to take life as it comes. As mentioned by Amelia in season 17, Link has a tendency for escapism, falling asleep whenever any crisis crops up. It’s easy to wonder if two people with such diametrically opposite characters could have a relationship that is not full of friction.

8 Make Sense: They Have Chemistry

Polar opposites or not, Link and Amelia have some lovely chemistry going for them, and actors Caterina Scorsone and Chris Carmack make it work naturally.

Fans had been starved of any meaningful romance when it came to Amelia Shepherd for the longest time, so the Link-Amelia chemistry came as a breath of fresh air. Given how they actually work, it would make sense for them to be together and to finally settle down with each other and with little Scout.

7 Don’t: They Were Waiting To Explode

Despite how Link and Amelia’s relationship has been going relatively smoothly, which is a first for Amelia at least, it has always felt as though something would come up at any moment and their lives would simply explode.

Perhaps it has been the tradition in the Grey’s universe to expect the worst all the time, but fans had been waiting nervously for the other shoe to drop in this apparently smooth-sailing relationship. And of course, for those who have watched the season 17 finale, fans weren’t wrong.

6 Make Sense: They Might Be Good For Each Other

Interestingly, their different personalities might actually be the very things that bring them closer since if there is one thing that is universally accepted, it is that ‘opposites attract.’

It also seems as if they are actually good for each other. Link calms Amelia down a bit, and Amelia manages to galvanize Link into action, bringing him out of his otherwise languid nature. Together, they balance each other out.

5 Don’t: Link Still Doesn’t Get Amelia, Though

While they seem to bring out the best in each other, it is also true that Link fails to understand Amelia even now. As mentioned by Amelia herself in the season 17 finale, she is a recovering addict and Link isn’t, leaving her feeling lonely at times.

The internal struggle that Amelia goes through is not something that Link is ever likely to completely understand or appreciate. So even though both have had trauma in their past, there are still gaps in how intimately they connect with each other.

4 Make Sense: Amelia’s Family Was Warming Up To Link

Amelia Shepherd comes from a family where everyone always seems to be on everyone else’s back, judging, nagging, and hurting without batting an eyelid. And as the Shepherd family’s black sheep, Amelia has been shown to get the brunt of it all. Her toxic relationship with her family was highlighted when they refused to attend her wedding to Owen, and also when she took Link along under false pretenses to attend a dinner at her sister’s place.

It was during this very dinner in the episode, “The Good Shepherd”, that Amelia’s sisters, otherwise clearly not well-disposed towards her, had demonstrated some interest and even shown an inclination to like Link. He had been his normal self–except, of course, he was playing a part–and the family seemed to be warming up to him. Now, this is not to say that the couple made sense because of this, but at least Amelia might have finally had her family’s approval if she was looking for it.

3 Don’t: They Don’t Want The Same Things

One of the biggest reasons they don’t make sense is because they clearly want different things in life. Link wants more children and a married life while Amelia doesn’t. This was what the latter had been reflecting on for a while in the final episodes of season 17, and what possibly led to the twist after Link’s proposal in the season finale.

True, Amelia had never been shown to be someone who knew exactly what she wanted in life. Yet, this was the one time she seemed sure. She is not looking at a fairytale life with the white picket fence as Link seems to be imagining, and that is a bridge they need to cross before committing.

2 Make Sense: They Kept It Together During The Pandemic

Link and Amelia have already spent a lifetime together keeping house and looking after a whole battalion of children, most of whom weren’t even their own. They did this throughout the global pandemic, and perhaps if they have been through that, then they can get through anything together.

The pandemic, which the series incorporated throughout its seventeenth season, has been pushing people to their limits, testing them, and one often gets perspective in times like these. Since the two of them were good at handling things, it could have been a sign that they were meant to be together.

1 Don’t: Their Relationship Progressed Due To The Surprise Pregnancy

Finally, Amelia and Link’s relationship had progressed quite far without too many hitches. Well, except that one time when Amelia wasn’t sure whose baby she was carrying.

It was the surprise pregnancy and the sudden arrival of baby Scout that seemed to bring the parents together, and before they could take any serious decision regarding their lives together, the pandemic happened and forced their relationship to evolve even further. So perhaps they should really ask themselves if living together was what they wanted.
