The Shondaland series has been officially been renewed for season 19, making it one of the longest-running shows on television since its debut in 2005. Season 18 of Grey’s Anatomy is currently on hiatus, with the first part of the season ending on quite the cliffhanger – literally. Season 18, episode 8 leaves off with Owen Hunt trapped in a car about to slide down the edge of a cliff. The next episode for this season, which will hopefully answer the question of whether or not Hunt survived the crash, is set to premiere on February 24th.

While fans and haters alike –  including main actress Ellen Pompeo for that matter – have expressed a desire for Grey’s Anatomy to end, others are still stirring up theories for the next season. And although ABC has not confirmed that season 19 will be the show’s final, it is plausible to assume the end is near.

The Return Of Cristina Yang

With so many prior main characters returning for cameos in the recent season, Sandra Oh is a name that comes up often when it comes to fan theories. While there is much speculation as to whether or not this will actually happen, user mercy_death has “faith that ultimately Sandra Oh will appear” and would prefer “a bottle episode of just her and Mer” in Switzerland.

After the long-awaited return of Derek Shepherd and George O’Malley in season 17, the return of Cristina Yang would be the next most anticipated reprise. It would also make sense in the world of the show as Meredith has yet to visit her best friend overseas. And who wouldn’t want to see a reunion between Meredith and her person!

Answers For Calzona

Other character names that often come up when discussing potential cameos are Callie Torres and Arizona Robbins. User monsterrav107 suggests “an idea for S19: bringing back Callie and Arizona for a couple of episodes.” In Arizona’s final episode, it is revealed that both she and Callie are single and living in the same city. It is further implied that Arizona hopes to rebuild her relationship with Callie, though there is no solid confirmation of this yet.

After the aforementioned character returns in seasons 17 and 18, it is very feasible to see a Calzona reunion in the upcoming season. Actress Sara Ramirez has even said she is open to reprising her role as Callie Torres, even calling it the “role of a lifetime.”

Richard Retires & Japril Reunites

The idea of Richard’s retirement has been bounced around a lot in the past few years, just as user Full-Surround predicts. This user has fleshed out a detailed theory in which Richard, post-retirement, moves with Catherine back to Boston to be closer to Jackson and April, along with their daughter, Harriet. Full-Surround goes on to suggest a re-marriage between April and Jackson, which would be a “perfect, full circle endgame” for the fan-favorite couple, Japril.

Just like Calzona, fans are dying for answers regarding updates on Japril’s relationship. Who knows whether Richard’s retirement will go hand-in-hand with a Japril reunion, but both theories are fair game for season 19.

Addison Stays

One of the better plotlines in season 18 was bringing back the former recurring character Addison Montgomery, portrayed by Kate Walsh. User Tutorzilla “would love if they made Addison permanent” in season 19, also stating that “the show is currently lacking a likable villain” in its current season.

While Addison may no longer be seen as a villain after her character arc and newfound connection with Meredith after Derek’s death, her sparky attitude and ability to tell it like it is gives the show that much-needed zest. With so few original main characters left in the series, Addison would be a great addition to the cast.

New Interns

It’s probably impossible for any round of interns to compare to the originals, but the likeability of the show’s most recent interns (now residents) is questionable at best. Tutorzilla wishes “they would sack all the interns and start over,” saying they find “Helm and Levi so annoying.”

Though these two characters have fairly significant roles in the show, their debatable fan reception makes their future storylines unpredictable for season 19. It’s probably unlikely to expect them to be written off the show entirely, but maybe a lesser focus on these characters would heighten show ratings overall.

Celebrity Guest Stars

Grey’s Anatomy is no stranger to guest stars, with big names like Geena Davis and Faye Dunaway making their way through the halls of Grey Sloan. Reddit user Gimmeshelter06 takes a new spin on this, saying they would like to see “some big names as guest stars playing themselves as patients.”

As the show nears its end, its possible Grey’s will pull out all the stops with some celebrity cameos. Whether the stars will play themselves is another question, but it would make for quite the storyline as some of the Grey Sloan doctors are considered celebrities within their own right.

Single Amelia

Doctor Amelia Shepherd has had her fair share of relationship woes in the past few seasons. After her divorce from Owen and quite a tumultuous relationship with Link, Amelia’s character did not take much of a break before engaging in a new romance with neuroscientist Kai Bartley. Though this relationship has mixed reactions from fans, Oncer93 thinks Amelia should “stay single, and go to therapy” in season 19, which is a plausible theory considering all she’s been through in recent relationships.

Oncer93 also predicts that Amelia will move out of Meredith’s house, where she has lived for quite some time now, and find her own home. Regardless of what happens exactly, it’s likely the new season will have an eventful journey laid out for Amelia – single or not.

Angel Of Death

After 18 seasons, it’s hard to imagine how the writers continuously conjure up new, exciting storylines. From bomb explosions to plane crashes, to multiple near death experiences for Meredith, Grey’s Anatomy has done it all – well, almost. Reddit user Haunting-Economist29 is “hoping for an Angel of Death storyline” in season 19, where viewers are “engaged in a long-term, high-stakes scenario” that could span an entire season.

Being that the show has miraculously not explored this storyline yet, it is a feasible prediction for the upcoming season. Whether its an angel of death or an extreme, life-altering natural disaster, there’s no limit to the vast imagination of Shonda Rhimes and the team behind Grey’s Anatomy.
