The trailer for Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19‘s upcoming 2022 crossover teases the fallout of the latter’s shocking midseason finale. Though Ellen Pompeo has signaled her desire to have Grey’s Anatomy end, the television universe it has created remains strong. The ABC medical drama has led to the creation of two spin-offs, one of which continues to entertain viewers on Thursday nights. Station 19 follows the lives of the firefighters who serve Seattle, many of which often intersect with the doctors of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. While Grey’s Anatomy is well into its 18th season, Station 19 is a relative baby in comparison with only 5 seasons under its belt.

Ever since Station 19 premiered in 2018, the series has crossed over with Grey’s Anatomy numerous times, often within mere weeks. Some fans have expressed displeasure with this format since it forces them to watch both shows, but it might be safe to say the latest crossover event has the power to dodge those criticisms. The 2022 Station 19/Grey’s Anatomy crossover will pick up from the latter’s midseason finale, which saw Dr. Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) topple over a cliff while trapped in a crashed car. His fate remains up in the air, even in the crossover’s trailer.

Shared online by ABC following the Grey’s Anatomy midseason finale, the crossover trailer finds the firefighters of Station 19, led by Ben Warren (Jason George), embarking on a rescue mission as they approach Owen’s totaled car. As several characters remark on how dire things look, the action moves to Grey Sloan as Meredith (Pompeo) and others react to news of the accident. By centering the latest Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 crossover on Owen’s fate, the creatives behind the shows have ensured there is a personal investment on both sides. Ben has known Owen for some time thanks to his stint on Grey’s Anatomy, and as the trailer shows, he’s fiercely determined to save the doctor. Meanwhile, the crew of Station 19 are bound to feel extra pressure to save Owen seeing as they’ve recently lost one of their own; Dean Miller (Okieriete Onaodowan) died earlier in Station 19 season 5 following an explosion, and his loss is still being felt.

Smartly, the crossover trailer doesn’t reveal any glimpse of Owen, truly keeping his status a mystery. It seems unlikely that he’ll be killed off at this stage, particularly since this season has seen him finally tie the knot with Teddy Altman (Kim Raver). However, Grey’s Anatomy does have a history of killing off characters in a shocking manner, as Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) and George O’Malley (T.R. Knight) can attest. If fans want to know for sure that Owen will pull through, they’ll have to tune into the crossover.

The Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 crossover airs Thursday, February 24 on ABC.
